DECISION MAKING 101 INSTRUCTOR HON. GARY L. BINDMAN (Ret.)

“Education should awaken the capacity to be self aware and not indulge in gratifying self- expression “Intelligence is the capacity to perceive the essential, the ‘What Is’, and awaken this capacity, in oneself and in others.” Krishnamurti Education And The Significance of Life

Let’s start with a test! You will not be graded and there are no right or wrong answers. Just two questions:

First Question You are standing on a bridge over train tracks. On the tracks in front of you are five men working. Coming from behind you is a train heading towards the men. Next to you on the bridge is a lever. If you pull the lever the train will be diverted to a track where one man is working, and he will die. If you do nothing all five workers will die. Do you do nothing and all five men die? Or Do you pull the lever and one dies and five live?

Second Question You are standing on a bridge over train tracks. Five workers are on the tracks below you. The train is coming down the tracks towards the men. This time however, there is no lever but a man, a large man, standing next to you. If you do nothing the five men will die, if you push the large man onto the tracks, he will die but the five workers will be saved. Do you do nothing and all five men die? Or Do you push the man overboard and one dies and five men live?

The Answers Question ONE - 9 out of 10 will pull the lever Question TWO - 9 out of 10 will not push the lever Tests show that the same location in the brain for everyone shouts NO! when deciding to throw the man overboard.

So? Do you want this to be your picture?

Or This?

When and How to make the Right Choices?

And the Answer is: TIME ENERGY SPACE T. E. S. is a quick self assessment tool to help you determine where you are in the world and in your body before making a decision.

TIME Do I have the TIME to clearly think through the decision? (Will I have the TIME to deal with the consequences of the decision I am making?)

ENERGY Do I have adequate ENERGY to clearly think through the decision? (Will I have the ENERGY to physically and mentally deal with the consequences of the decision I am making?)

SPACE Do I have the SPACE to clearly think through the decision? (Will I be able to hold SPACE for the consequences of the decision I am making?)

T. E. S. provides students with the tools necessary for thinking critically about the decisions they make, not just respond to the first thing that comes to mind.

DECISION MAKING 101 Text RIGHT CHOICES = RIGHT ACTION

Disclaimer Do Not accept anything I say at face value. Look at everything I say through the eyes and ears of your own life experience to see whether what you learn in class is true or not FOR YOU.
