2 Discovered by Ralph Waldo Emerson, in New England in 1831.Romanticism is a artistic, and intellectual movement that emphasized nature, human emotions, and the imagination. This effected the social reform because they developed another philosophy called transcendentalism. The romantic assumption that human nature was essentially good institutions could be changed for the better, gave impulse to the widespread desire for social reform.

3 Transcendentalism was the outcome of romanticism. This philosophy emphasized that truth can be discovered by observing nature and relating it to one’s own emotional and spiritual experience. The beliefs of this philosophy is that society is the ultimate reason for corruption of the purity of a person.

4 Was a wide spread Christian movement, to awaken religious sentiments that lasted from the 1790’s to the 1830’s. Revival meeting lasted days as they studied the bible, reflected on their lives, and heard emotional sermons. 1 in every 15 Americans belonged to a church. 1 in every 6 was a member.

6 The Temperance movement was the total elimination of alcohol. Women had a big role in this movement because it was mostly filled by women who had endured the effects of unbridled drinking by many of their husbands. They thought that alcohol was to blame for many of society's problems, being severe health problems, people being left lonely and crime.

7  Mormons are a religious community. The Mormons migrated westward along the Oregon trail to escape persecution. Joseph Smith founded this, then later got murdered by the anti Mormons in 1847. They finally stopped at the Great Salt Lake, and declared “this is the place”

8 Women began to gather their strength in the middle of the 1800’s. They joined together to break down the bars that separated them from men. Most of the women who joined together were white and well-off. They demanded rights for women, temperance and the abolishment of slavery.

9  Worked to improve treatment for the mentally disabled, and reform the nations harsh and often inhumane prison system. She was also one of the evangelicals (Christians) that were strong abolitionists and antislavery reformers.

10 The abolition was more urgent then women's rights because threaten to destroy the union. The Abolitionist movement in the United States of America was an effort to end slavery in a nation that valued personal freedom and believed "all men are created equal."

11 The Seneca Falls convention was a call for women to have equal rights. It was located in Seneca Falls, New York, in 1848. This convention inspired other women rights conventions around the world. The Declaration of Sentiments, was signed in 1848 by 68 women and 32 men. This was to make sure men and women were treated equal. Make sure there natural rights are protected. In the Declaration of Sentiments it states, “that all men and women are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

12 Brook Farm Was ran like a business. They were made up of families. The whole venture of this utopia was “plain living and high thinking. They were a community that worked togther. Then later they collapsed in debt. Oneida This utopia believed in completely different things. They beloved in free love (complex marriage), Birth control (male continence). This pretty much meant you get with whoever you wanted to. They would take the smartest prettiest girl and the smartest prettiest guy and have them make children that would be perfect. This was founded in New York in 1848. Utopian – a ideal living place, where everyone would want to live. Your dream house.
