5 PPT Program

6 PPT in this context is defined as the technical methods, processes, techniques, tools, and materials that support the development and use of personal protective equipment worn by individuals to reduce the effects of their exposure to a hazard. NIOSH PPT / NPPTL Vision & Mission The VISION is to be the leading provider of quality, relevant, and timely PPT research, training, and evaluation. The MISSION of the PPT program is to prevent work-related injury, illness and death by advancing the state of knowledge and application of personal protective technologies (PPT).

9 NIOSH Respirator Certification is the cornerstone of PPT Program activities

10 NIOSH Respirator Certifications  Approximately 300 NIOSH respirator certifications are issued each year  90 manufacturers  102 manufacturing sites  18 countries

11  Respirator Certification  Engineering Evaluation  Respirator Testing  QA Plan Evaluation  Post Certification  Manufacturing Site Audits  Respirator Product Audits  Respirator Evaluations NIOSH Respirator Certification 42 CFR Part 84

12 Post Certification Programs  Manufacturer Site Audits  Certified Product Audits Extended Testing (Default Testing) Policy  Certified Product Investigation  Firefighter SCBA Evaluation  SCSR Long Term Field Evaluation

13 The PPT Program establishes performance criteria to update and develop standards to ensure PPE evolves with technology.

14 Policy & Standards Development  CBRN Respirator Standards  Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) Standard  Mine Escape Respirator Standard  Quality Assurance Provisions  Total Inward Leakage Requirements  Consensus Standards  Guidance Documents

15 Updates to 42 CFR Part 84 Current Status  Notices of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) Quality Assurance Module (published as NPRM, comment period ended 10/09/2009) Closed Circuit Escape Respirator (CCER) (final rule being developed) Total Inward Leakage (TIL) for Air-Purifying Particulate Respirators (includes filtering facepiece respirators [FFR]) (proposed rule published in FR, Public meeting Dec 3, 2009, comments accepted until Dec 29, 2009)  Concepts under Development Closed Circuit SCBA (CC-SCBA) Powered Air-Purifying Respirators (PAPR) Supplied Air Respirators (SAR) Air Fed Ensembles TIL for Other Respirator Classes PPT Program Goal - develop two NPRM per year

16 The PPT Program conducts research to better understand and improve worker protection provided by PPT including:  Application of new technologies  Science based interventions

17  Respiratory Protection  Sensors & Electronics – Integration with PPT  Protective Clothing & Ensembles  Human Performance  Fall protection harnesses  Hearing protection PPT Program Research

18 The PPT Program is developing new and enhancing existing surveillance activities.

19 PPT Surveillance  Construction intervention studies  Development of PPE Surveillance Module for pesticide-related PPE in Agriculture  Collaboration with CDPH Surveys and Observational assessments of General Acute Care Facilities  Pilot to develop PPE Demonstration and Sentinel System in Healthcare Build upon Vanderbilt Occupational Health Information System (VOHIS)  NIOSH-wide involvement in surveillance activities
