C O A L I T I O N Corner Introduction This segment features information on family assistance programs in the following areas: –Spouse/Partner Employment –Child Care –School Finding –Elder Care

C O A L I T I O N Corner Demographic Background* –In 2002, 66% of salaried and wage employees lived as part of a couple – 59% were married and 7% lived with partners –Among married employees, dual-earner couples have increased from 66% in 1977 to 78% in 2002 –Employed female spouses with children under 18 increased from 49% to 67% during the same period –Increases attributed solely to expanded participation of married women in the labor force *Source: National Study of the Changing Workforce by the Families and Work Institute

C O A L I T I O N Corner Spouse/Partner Employment Assistance –To keep pace with changing demographics, formal spouse employment assistance programs have been steadily increasing for more than 10 years –Worldwide ERC ® ’s Family Issues reports that: 4 in 10 employers have some form of support for employed spouses written into their formal policies, with one-fourth offering it on a case-by- case basis About 25% of firms offer partners of transferring employees formal employment assistance On average, just under 20% of employees availed themselves of this type of assistance in 2003

C O A L I T I O N Corner Child Care Assistance –4 in 10 companies offer some form of child care assistance to relocating employees – 39% via a formal policy and 2% on a case-by-case basis –Most common form of assistance: provision of pre-tax flexible spending account specifically for child care –Companies offering assistance reported that approximately 25% of transferees used such provisions in 2003

C O A L I T I O N Corner School Finding Assistance –Slightly more than one-quarter of firms surveyed have instituted formal policies for school-finding assistance –An additional 23% offer school-finding assistance on a case-by-case basis

C O A L I T I O N Corner Elder Care Assistance To meet the needs of mobile employee caring for elderly relatives, Family Issues reports that: –Approximately 20% of employers surveyed offer some form of elder-care assistance through a formal written policy –An additional 3% offer such assistance on a case-by-case basis –The most prevalent form of formal assistance: moving an elderly relative residing with transferring family. Nearly as common: offering transferees a list of available elder-care facilities/programs –Within relocation programs, elder care is the most infrequently accessed form of family assistance, with companies reporting an average of 8% of their employees taking advantage of such programs when offered
