The conflict with Grey became a revolt throughout Wales. Even Welsh monks returned from Oxford to join Glyndŵr. The Welsh were unhappy with how they had been treated by the English. Wales had been invaded and conquered in 1282. For eight years Glyndŵr and the Welsh were successful. They defeated English armies, captured English castles and even made a deal with the French. However, by 1410 Glyndŵr and his forces had been defeated and Owain was forced in to hiding. Glyndŵr probably died in 1416. Owain Glyndŵr was born around 1355, although no one is certain of the actual date. His father Gruffydd Fychan II, Lord of Glyndyfrdwy and a descendent of the royal family of Powys, whilst his mother was related to the royal house of Deheubarth. Owain studied law in London before he joined the English army. He served with distinction in Scotland before retiring to his estates in north east Wales. It was here that he came in to conflict with Reginald de Grey. It was this conflict that led to Glyndŵr rising up against Grey in 1400.
