WHAT IS A GOAL? A Goal: Is something you want to accomplish Has several steps Gives purpose, confidence, and self esteem Should be meaningful and reachable

WHY SET GOALS? Goals: Give us direction Put drive and passion into our life Force us to set priorities Challenge us: ie. Will our goals end up being dreams or realities? Help us make decisions Measure our progress Help us overcome fear

WHY SET GOALS? Goals: Increase self esteem and confidence Help us move beyond our self doubts Make us aware of our strengths Identify weaknesses so we can improve them

SHORT TERM GOALS Goals that occur over a relatively short period of time (eg. today, this week); the steps we take to reach each long term goal

LONG TERM GOALS Goals that extend over a long period of time (eg. 1 year, 5 years, a lifetime!)

ACTION PLAN A written guide designed to achieve a specific goal It is the “how” of goal attainment An action plan should include: 1) a clear goal statement 2) a list of short term goals 3) set deadlines

HOW TO SET SHORT TERM GOALS Decide on your goals and list them Develop an Action Plan to achieve goals. Evaluate your acievement. Revise your goals and plans.

The Most Effective Goals are S.M.A.R.T. SPECIFIC: can you visualize the details clearly? MEASURABLE: are you able to measure your progress? ATTAINABLE: is your goal within your capacity to fulfill? REALISTIC: Do you have the time and willingness to pursue this goal? Is your goal doable? TIMELY: Do you have a start and end date? Give yourself time, but not too much!
