Magellan Magellan sought a southern waterway to the Pacific Ocean He sailed around the tip of South America Ships were lost in bad storms Magellan died in the Philippines The 18 sailors who lived were the first to sail around the world

Pineda Goals Alonso Alvarez de Pineda wanted to find a northern waterway to the Pacific In 1519 he sailed with a fleet from Jamaica into the Gulf of Mexico Results He headed west from Florida and hit a river he named “River of Palms” His group camped there for 40 days and returned to Jamaica Pineda and his explorers were the first Europeans to see the Texas coast They also produced a map of the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico

Narvaez In 1527 Panfilo de Narvaez lead another voyage to the Gulf of Mexico 5 ships with 600 soldiers and horses In April 1528 the explorers landed near Tampa Bay, Florida He met Indians and they told him of the Apalachee, a land rich in gold Narvaez divided his force and 300 soldiers went in search of the gold

Struggle Traveling through the Florida swamps the Spaniards became lost and ran out of food Many were killed or wounded during Indian attacks When arrived at Apalachee, there was no gold Discouraged they made their way back to the coast

Shipwrecked When they reached the shore, they could not find their ships The ships had actually returned home The stranded and starving soldiers had to eat their horses to survive They built several small boats and set out to sea Panfilo de Narvaez’s expedition ended in a ship wreck on the Texas coast Three boats washed up on Texas coast and Narvaez drowned The two other ships washed up on a Texas Island

Narvaez Goals Find Gold in America Results April 1528 the explorers landed near Tampa Bay, Florida He met Indians and they told him of the Apalachee, a land rich in gold Narvaez divided his force and 300 soldiers went in search of the gold When arrived at Apalachee, there was no gold They headed back but the ships had left Panfilo de Narvaez’s expedition ended in a ship wreck on the Texas coast

Cabeza de Vaca Cabeza de Vaca and 80 soldiers made it to the island The Spaniard spent eight years among the Texas Indians in the 1500s Stranded once again they last most of their supplies and clothes With winter coming the situation was growing worse The Karankawa Indians took the explorers in and shared their supplies with them Most of the Spanish died during the winter The few that survived were held captive and forced to work hard

Cabeza de Vaca For the next few years de Vaca worked as a servant, a trader, and a healer Finally he met three other explorers who had been taken by the Coahuiltecan Indians. Will meet a north African named Estevanico and they will search for Mexico

End of an Ordeal They traveled from one Indian village to another, along the way de Vaca pulled on arrow from an Indians chest After 8 years they came across some Spanish soldiers and were taken to Mexico City. Cabeza de Vaca published his story called The Narrative of Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca
