Our state of GA is C.P.A.R.B.!

Lookout Mountain

Appalachian Plateau The most northwestern of all GA regions The smallest of all regions – only Dade County Often referred to as the “TAG” region – the meeting place of TN, AL, and GA Least populated and least travelled of all 5 regions due to size and terrain Coal mining and tourism of state parks provide jobs Location of Lookout Mountain (near Chattanooga, TN) and Chickamauga National Battlefield (Civil War site)

Dalton, GA Ellijay, GA

Ridge and Valley Wedged btwn. App. Plat. And Blue Ridge regions Major apple orchards and cattle farming between steep ridges in valleys Ellijay, GA – “Apple Capital of Georgia” Dalton, GA – “Carpet Capital of the World” Carpet mills located within a 65-mile radius of Dalton produce about 85% of the carpet sold in the U.S. The U.S. industry accounts for about 45% of the world's carpet production. Pop. over 40% Hispanic (2000 census) – primary workers in carpet industry

Tallulah Gorge Dahlonega, GA Helen, GA Brasstown Bald Amicalola Falls

Blue Ridge The most northeastern of all GA regions The largest of the “mountain regions” Highest mountain peak in GA, Brasstown Bald, found here Dahlonega, GA – site of the first gold rush in US history in 1828 Helen, GA – Bavarian town built to stimulate the local economy Two natural wonders – Tallulah Gorge and Amicalola Falls Receives the most precipitation in all of GA – warm Gulf air hits cool, high mtns. = causing rainfall Rainfall is key b/c many GA rivers start here and flow southward into Piedmont and Coastal Plain; rain supplies river and man-made lakes with water

Piedmont Gently sloping hills and valleys Well-drained soil w/ lots of pine trees and hardwoods Chattahoochee, Flint, Ocmulgee, Oconee Rivers provide water to lakes for recreation and drinking water Kaolin – mined near Fall Line, most valuable mineral in GA (paper, paint, kittly liter, soaps, etc.) Granite and clay products Moderate agriculture: wheat, soybeans, corn, poultry, and cattle ½ population of state lives here because this is where most jobs are! Most jobs are business and industry-related; Forestry and mining also present Major cities: Atlanta, Athens, Marietta, and Millegeville Attractions: Stone Mtn., Turner Field, GA aquarium Major universities found here: UGA, GA Tech, GSU, KSU

Coastal Plain (Inner and Outer Coastal Plain) Flat, sandy soil Groundwater/aquifer s found here Fall-line = shoreline of prehistoric ocean = separates Coastal Plain and Piedmont Okefenokee Swamp – largest swamp in North America Major cities: Savannah, Brunswick, Valdosta, Albany, and Macon Barrier islands (Jekyll, Tybee, St. Simons, etc.) - block ocean waves from hitting GA’s mainland and eroding away soil (Atlantic) Intracoastal Waterway – area b/w barrier islands and mainland gives boats safety from the storms, strong currents, and waves Marshes / estuaries / wetlands Seafood industry along coast Tourism is HUGE along coast Waterways/ocean access for trade/shipping at Savannah and Brunswick ports Agriculture is big business in the ICP (Inner Coastal Plain) area: Vidalia onions, peanuts, corn, pecans Forestry a major industry throughout region

Appalachain Mtns. run through all 3 mountainous regions; Mountian range in Blue Ridge called the Blue Ridge Mtns./ outside of B.R., mountains called Appalachian Mtns.

Flows 436 miles from the Blue Ridge to the Gulf of Mexico. Southern section forms natural boundary with Alabama. Runs through and provides water for Atlanta, Columbus, Helen, Buford, etc..

314 miles long Starts in SC and flows southeast into the Atlantic Ocean Site of English colony led by James Oglethorpe Major trade/travel route in early GA history

Fall Line marks the shoreline of the prehistoric ocean. Drop in elevation from Piedmont to Coastal Plain creates waterfalls. Difficult for first settlers to cross but were later used for water power for textile mills.

Okefenokee Swamp largest freshwater swamp in N. America

Barrier islands - protect mainland from storms and erosion. Excellent tourism spots. Total of 12 islands.
