Introduction to hacking Definition of a Hacker: “A person who illegally gains access to and sometimes tampers with information in a computer system”( Webster Dictionary ) Hacking began in the 1960’s from Universities Does more harm than good It is an act of thievery, blackmail, and privacy Hacking can lead to identity theft, access to personal accounts, and email addresses It leads to unwanted computer problems like glitches, viruses, and spam

Statement Protecting personal information and computers has become more difficult recently with the growth of hackers. Government officials need to monitor internet activity more closely to prevent these crimes.

Key points Worlds largest credit card theft happened at Home Depot Recently Over 53 million credit card numbers and email addresses were stolen There is no longer privacy once personal information is stolen Americans are more worried about hackers online rather than government officials snooping through their accounts. Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 68% of internet users think current laws are not protecting their privacy enough online, while 50% are worried about the amount of personal information about them that's online

Conclusion Hacking leads several people into the interest of creating newer, better software which can revolutionize the electronic world Safeguards to networks need to be monitored closely to minimize hacking Routers, firewalls, computer updates have been used to prevent hackers from taking control over accounts. The creation of stronger network systems need to be constantly updated and maintained to prevent these crimes.

Biography My name is Emely Porter and I am a freshman at Virginia Commonwealth University and an out-of-state student from Weston, Florida.
