1 Ch 14 Sec 4 Nationalism in India and Southwest Asia

2 India: After WWI The people of India had expected independence after WWI for their help. Both Hindus and Muslims set aside their differences to work together to get rid of the British.

3 Protesting As protests grew more intense in India, the British passed the Rowlett Acts. This law allowed the British to imprison any protestor for up to 2 years.

4 Amritsar Massacre In 1919, 10,000 protestors in the city of Amritsar began praying in protest to this law. The British opened fire, killing 400 and wounding 1200.

5 Gandhi Mohandas Gandhi, seeing too much suffering, began a non violent protest. Gandhi practiced civil disobedience. Calmly disobeying the laws. He called for boycotts, strikes, and a Salt March, where Indians stopped buying British Salt, and made their own from the ocean.

6 Middle East Ottoman Empire becomes Turkey, led by Mustafa Kemal.
Persia becomes the country Iran, dominated by the Islamic religion and Oil.
