6 John Lewis, who led the march was beaten in the head. He has been quoted saying, “ I don’t see how President Johnson can send troops to Vietnam --- - I don’t see how he can send troops to the Congo---- I don’t see how he can send troops to Africa and can’t send troops to Selma.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= j6eeK4YzUqI

7 Attempt 2 ●MLK began calling on religious leaders from all over the nation to join the march. ●They began to plan the march for 2 days later. President Johnson Judge Frank M. Johnson Fred Gray

8 March 9th ●Disobeying the court order was the only way the march could continue to happen on the 9th. ●More than 2,000 marchers came to attend.

9 March 15th ●Johnson addressed Congress during a televised address.

10 The March from Selma ●March 25, 1965, Martin Luther King led thousands to Montgomery, AL ●5-day, 54 mile from Selma, AL ●limited by 300 marchers over a stretch of two-lane highway.

11 Final Rally ●was held on the steps of the capital. “ The end we seek is a society at peace with itself, a society that can live with its conscience. And that will be a day not of the white man, not of the black man. That will be the day of man as man’’ MLK

12 Results ●On August 6th President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965. ●He called the right to vote, “the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison men because they‘re different from other men.”

13 Martin Luther King Jr. ●a Baptist minister and social activist. He led the Civil Rights Movement in the US from mid 1950’s until his assassination in 1968

15 Fred Gray ---went on to becoming the President of the National Bar Association. Was elected to be Alabama state representative and held the position for 4 years

16 Frank Johnson ----Served more than 40 years on the federal bench. Died in 1999

17 John Lewis --Became the U.S. Representative for Georgia’s 5th congressional district since 1987
