1 Warm Up 3/5/14 1. What was the purpose of AAA? 2. What did Carl Vinson want for the US? 3. What impact did the Bell Aircraft Company have on WWII and Georgia? (2 things)

2 1. What was the purpose of AAA? The government paid farmers to stop producing crops such as cotton and tobacco. Therefore prices of the crops went down and they were able to make money off of them.

3 2. What did Carl Vinson want for the US? A strong Navy! He made sure $$ went towards this!

4 3. What impact did the Bell Aircraft Company have on WWII and Georgia? (2 things) WWII: Produced over 650 B-29 bombers Georgia: Employed over 30,000 people

8 2. What did the Nazis use Concentration Camps for? To imprison, work, and execute Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, and political dissidents

9 3. What did many Georgians begin to rethink after hearing about the Holocaust? Their treatment of minorities in the state and their racial practices (The stories about the horrible events in Europe touched the lives of many Georgians and made them “look in the mirror”)

10 4. What did former Georgia Governor Joe Frank Harris establish, and what was its purpose? The Georgia Commission on the Holocaust to educate people about the Holocaust and create an awareness of the events

11 SS8H9 d. Discuss President Roosevelt's ties to Georgia, including his visits to Warm Springs and his impact on the state.

12 1. Where did Roosevelt usually stay when he visited Georgia, and why did he stay there? (Visited over 40 times!) His home in Warm Springs, the “Little White House,” because he exercised in the warm water pools of the spring to help ease the crippling effects of polio

13 2. Why did most Georgians love/support Roosevelt? His New Deal program provided aid to many suffering from the effects of the Depression

14 3. What else did Roosevelt do that made many Georgians love/support him? Became a friend to the locals in Warm Springs and hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for all of the patients there

15 4. Why did Roosevelt’s visits to Georgia sometimes bring controversy? Many people in the North did not think Roosevelt did enough to help end segregation and the lack of Civil Rights in Georgia and the rest of the South

16 5. What did Roosevelt do that angered many Georgians? Spoke against unfair labor practices in Georgia’s textile industry and urged Georgia to remove conservative Democratic senator Walter F. George from office because of his efforts in blocking the New Deal legislation

17 6. Where and how did Roosevelt die, and how do Georgians still remember him today? Died from a massive stroke on April 12, 1945 in Warm Springs and today many people still go to Warm Springs for treatment of strokes and injuries and visit Roosevelt’s home
