Rest Houses located in forest areas were known as Dak Bungalow, where the Dak runners used to take rest.
In British Era, Collector used to hand over the charge of district to the Postmaster.
Postal Department started to use the services of Railways for carrying mail from 1854 when Railways started its service from Thane to Mumbai.

India Post is the Largest and Oldest Postal system in the world.
DOP comprises of two wings i.e. Postal & Railway Mail Service.
It is having a net work of 1,54856 Post Offices out of which15736 are in urban and 1,39164 are in Rural areas known as Branch Post Offices
A Post office serves Sq. KMs. covering 8086 people on an average in India in urban and 6124 in rural.

16. Administrative Structure …
The country is divided into 22 Postal Circles headed by CPMG / Principal CPMG.
Each Postal Circle is divided into Regions.
A Postmaster General is in charge of each region.
Every Postal Region has Postal and RMS divisions.
SP/SSP is the head of the Postal Division.
SRM/SSRM is the head of RMS Division.
Each Circle will have Circle Stamp Depot., which gets stamps from Security Press and distribute it to Head Post Offices.
Postal Stores Depots in different regions of the Circle supply forms and stationery to Postal and RMS offices.

18. OPERATIVE SET UP - POST OFFICES
Head Office –
It is the Chief of a group of PO’s consisting of itself and its subordinate offices called SO’s & BO’s.
The Monetary transactions of the group are consolidated in the Head Office.
It may be in charge of a Higher Selection Grade (HSGII) Postmaster, HSG-I Postmaster or a Senior Postmaster (Gazetted).
The principal HPO at the circle Head quarters is called General Post Office (GPO)
Sub post office
It is a Post Office subordinate to a H.O.
Its monetary transactions are incorporated in the accounts of its H.O.
The Officer in charge of a SO is called Sub Postmaster (SPM)

19. ‘C’ class SO: A SO without PA only with one SPM.
Types of Sub Post Offices -
‘C’ class SO: A SO without PA only with one SPM.
B class SO: SO with one SPM and one PA
A class SO: SO with one SPM and two PAs.
LSG SO: SO with one SPM and three or more PAs
Town SO: A sub office in a town or its suburbs where there is also a Head Office.

20. Night Post Office :
Some important Post Offices have extended working hours up to 8.30 pm on weekdays.
On Sundays and holidays they work for limited hours but not beyond 6.00 pm.
Such post offices are called Night Post Offices.
Branch Office –
Lower than in status than Sub Office.
It is in direct account with a Head Office or a Sub Office.
The monetary transactions of BO are incorporated in the accounts of its Account Office.

These Post Offices serve defense personnel. These are also known as Central Base PO.
There are two CBPO. One at Delhi (1 CBPO or c/o 56 APO) and other at Calcutta (2 CBPO or c/o 99 APO) HO status.
FPO -
Field POs are coming under 1 CBPO or 2 CBPO. Sub Office status.
Foreign PO -
Foreign POs deal with the incoming and outgoing foreign mail.

Our department handles huge amount of cash which either belongs to the customers or which has to be credited to the government accounts.
For the purpose of auditing the accounts of the department of post there are postal accounts offices.
Here is a list of all the Postal Accounts Offices, their abbreviations and their jurisdiction.
Every Head Post Office should send periodical returns of various accounts items to the Accounts Office of its area.
