What is an Online Model Course? A fully-developed course for online delivery that: – Satisfies curriculum requirements as set forth by the respective program as approved by C&I – Meets stringent Federal and State regulatory requirements and ACCJC accreditation standards – Meets best practices that support online learner success

Primary Benefits Students: Provides greater access to high need/high demand sections Students want online courses. They provide flexibility and greater access to goal attainment. Design provides a consistent, high quality, engaging and accessible experience for students Faculty: Offers a ready-to-use learner-centered course for current, new, and adjunct faculty, if they choose. – Individual facilitators are encouraged to personalize the course College: Creates substantial development cost savings – No need to develop entirely new versions of the course with each faculty member – Are developed once with periodic updates Less demand on physical facilities

Participation Participation in developing or using model courses is optional If a Division participates: – There is no DE policy regarding these assignments. The Division Deans follows the same procedure as they would with face-to-face program development. – Division Deans, in consultation with PCC disciplinary faculty, forwards names of interested faculty to the DE Department to either develop content for a C&I approved course or to teach a course.

Outcomes Spring 2013 Online Model Course success and retention rates are in line with statewide averages. Online success and retention rates will improve as the Online Model Course Program and developed courses are reviewed and refined, and additional student success measures are implemented. *Spring 2013 courses were Developed in an accelerated Timeline, which is no longer followed,

Clarification Faculty – New/outside faculty have not been hired to develop model courses Existing PCC disciplinary full time faculty have been approached first by Division Deans If existing PCC adjunct faculty are selected, they are qualified to develop content and teach in the discipline DE Experience – Developers are content specialists, the instructional designer assures/ guides effective design – 16-week PCC DE Institute is a full DE training/development program Course Quality – No person, faculty or otherwise, have been paid to fix courses – Course Developers teach from and revise model courses

Clarification cont.… Adjunct Faculty Hires – New adjunct faculty were hired once to expand section offerings (Spring 2013) due to passing of Prop 30. Full time faculty loads/overloads were maxed out Stipends – Requested by full time and adjunct faculty alike for time/effort involved in online course development – Model Course Development participants thus far: 1 adjunct faculty 15 full time faculty
