The club picnic last week was a lot of fun and over $20 was raised with the bingo game.

Rich King called the real bingo game for the most of us as we sipped our beer and hoped for better luck. You paid 25¢ for a card, four for a buck, and tried to listen to Rich’s calls and find the numbers on your card(s) before his next call. More beer, please.

of sight). Sam McGrew is at far left and Sara McGrew is between Nikki and Carole Ann. Got that? HEY, WE NEED MORE BEER OVER HERE!!! Tim Barnes (left) his wife, Karen (at the far end) and daughters Nikki (on the right) and Maggie (at Tim’s left) are neighbors of Carole Ann (on Karen’s left) and David Hunter (out

And our thanks to David Lin for the place, Pedro Heller for the food and Sam McGrew for this game that we, and our kids, enjoyed so much after supper. It was played like bingo, but on Sam’s command, you tossed four little rubber balls into your bin and hoped they landed in the right depressions in a bingocard-like thingy. Then you tossed one at a time, again on Sam’s command, until someone hollered “Bingo!” and you lost…

Program – Sam McGrew introduced the speaker, Attorney John Thies. John is a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law and is a shareholder in the firm of Webber & Thies, P.C., where he practices business representation and general litigation.

He spoke about his year as President of the Illinois State Bar Association in 2012.

His first focus was on the good work of the Bar Association in the “ISBA Lawyers Feeding Illinois” program, which set a goal of raising a million meals, Feb. 18-March 1, 2013. They have reached 3.8 million meals.

John pointed out that we get 5 meals for every $1 donated to the Feeding Illinois.

John got his wife involved and Terry Thies is now Chair of the program. www.lawyersfeedingil.org www.lawyersfeedingil.org

John also worked on several programs throughout his year, including the following. A study of Court funding, which is vital, but the funding is very small, compared to the other branches of government.

He also supported Civics teaching in our public schools.

He was concerned about the debt that law students are accumulating, which averages $100,000. Such debt is affecting the recruitment of lawyers to smaller communities and decreasing their community service work.

This problem is throughout academic educational programs.

He took several questions:

What are some solutions for the student debt problem?

His focus was on the way we train lawyers, which could change the basic costs, such as hiring adjunct faculty and decrease emphasis on faculty publications.

Byron Balbach pointed out that John and his father were the first Father/Son Presidents of the ISBA.

Tail Twister – Omer Benn asked Paul Hendren to carry the bucket.

He reported something from Tom Yaxley - 10 major events since the Cubs won the World Series: here are a few: Radio and TV were invented, so the cubs can now hear and see their team lose; Halley’s Comet passed the earth twice; Harry Caray was born and died.

Omer fined Fonda Bowden,

and Frank Duff for his lottery winnings;

Sam McGrew for his 83 family member’s recognition at the State Fair.

He also auctioned Marvin’s Garden vegetables and Rich King bragged for his daughter’s having babysat for our speaker.

He fined our President for something or other.

And he fined our publisher, Dave Hunter, for publishing a Letter to the Editor in the News-gazette.
