Asexual Reproduction
2
What is Asexual Reproduction? Formation of a new organism or individual This new organism or individual has identical genetic information to its parent.
3
Examples of Asexual Reproduction Mitosis
4
Examples of Asexual Reproduction
5
Binary Fission Budding Sporulation Vegetative Reproduction Regeneration/ Fragmentation
6
What organisms use Asexual Reproduction? BACTERIA Unicellular (single celled) Do not contain a true nucleus Examples include: Examples include: cholera, syphilis, anthrax and leprosy
7
What organisms use Asexual Reproduction? PROTISTS Unicellular DNA is contained in a nucleus. Are the base of many food chains (example: plankton in a marine ecosystem)
8
What organisms use Asexual Reproduction? FUNGI Bodies of these organisms are made up of tiny filaments Includes: yeast, moulds and mushrooms
9
FUNGI JOKE! What did the carrot say about the mushroom at the party?
10
FUNGI JOKE! HE WAS A FUN GUY!
11
What organisms use Asexual Reproduction? ANIMALS Can be divided into 2 distinct groups: 1) Vertebrates (have backbones) Humans are vertebrates, but do not reproduce asexually aside from body cells 2) Invertebrates (do not have backbones) Examples include: sponges, jellyfish, worms and insects Reproduce asexually to form one or more identical offspring from a single parent.
12
What organisms use Asexual Reproduction? PLANTS Repair themselves by mitosis (asexual reproduction). Ensures that each new plant will have the same DNA as the parent.
