2 Background The Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI) is established under the Science and Technology Act,1979, Cap 250 of the Laws of Kenya (Now repealed and replaced by the Science, Technology and Innovation Act, 2013) The institute is mandated to undertake research and development in all industrial and allied technologies, including: mechanical, civil and chemical engineering; food, textile, leather, ceramics & clay technologies; industrial chemistry , power resources, environment, among others

To be a Centre of Excellence in Industrial Research, Technology and Innovation MISSION To Undertake Industrial Research, Technology and Innovation, and Disseminate findings that will have a positive impact on National Development

4 Institutional Objectives
To Enhance the national industrial technology innovation process as a strategy towards rapid socio-economic development; To Contribute to the development of sufficient capacity for industrial Research, Technology and Innovation. To Contribute to the creation of the national wealth through the transfer of efficient technologies that are accessible to micro and small enterprises in Kenya. To Promote the development of a strong capacity for primary engineering as to reduce dependence on imported plant machinery and spares.
