1. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN EXTRACTION OF LIMONENE FROM ORANGE PEELS
This case of steam distillation is used to isolate
the essential oil of limonene from the orange
peels. Orange peels are cut into pieces, and
placed into water. The peel of oranges are boiled
in water and the oil produced (limonene) distilled
in steam at a temperature just below 100oc, well
below its normal boiling point. The immiscible oil
can then be separated.

4. MODEL SYSTEM: invivo
Rats will be injected with carcinogen continuously until a large tumor mass is detected. Rats will be placed on about 10 percent limonene for 21 weeks.
EXPECTED RESULT
Limonene will cause about 80 percent inhibition of mammary tumors.

7. EXPECTED RESULT IN HUMANS
The rat metabolism of limonene closely parallels that of humans in terms of both the specific metabolites formed and the time in which they formed. These results suggest that limonene will have similar cancer‑treating benefits in humans.

8. limonene inhibits cancer formation by increasing the levels of phase II liver enzymes that bind a wide variety of carcinogens to form less toxic conjugates that are readily eliminated by the digestive and respiratory systems.
