It can increase the chance that your son or daughter get a job they enjoy It can increase the chance that they will receive greater financial returns from employment It's necessary for many professional careers HE teaches many transferable business and life skills that will only help in their future Parents’ evening 2013 Why Higher Education?

Higher education is still free at the point you study – you don’t have to pay up front However the average tuition fees for studying a degree is now over £8000 a year at universities HE courses at colleges tend to be less expensive There are excellent straightforward resources that explain this whole area really well at: www.moneysavingexpert.com/students Parents’ evening 2013 Facts about fees

There are two types of student loans, tuition fee loans & maintenance loans Almost everyone is entitled to a full tuition fee loan Almost everyone is entitled to a maintenance loan – although only 65% of the maximum is guaranteed with the rest dependent on income Student loans don’t appear on students credit files Finance arrangements for students from Wales, NI or Scotland or those going to Wales, NI or Scotland are not the same as in England Parents’ evening 2013 Student Finance loans

No debt collectors will come calling – if you are earning then it is collected automatically like tax. If you are not working, you stop repaying Because you now repay once you start earning over £21,000 (rather than £15,000 as it was before), you’ll now pay back less per month - although you’ll likely be repaying for far longer It is much more like a graduate tax than a loan After 30 years anything left to repay is wiped off Parents’ evening 2013 Facts about repayments

To apply to almost all HE courses in the UK you must use the UCAS online application form Students must complete all 7 of the sections of the form make up to 5 course choices send it to the school where they’ll add a reference and send it to UCAS The application fee is £23 this year Full details and guidance on completed the online form can be found on their website: www.ucas.com Parents’ evening 2013 The UCAS form
