Ohio Core Legislation Effective with the class of 2014 & beyond Purposes: Establish rigorous high school graduation expectations for all students Prepare Ohioans to meet demands of the knowledge- based economy Prepare all students for college and work Strengthen link between high school graduation and college entry Reduce remediation at the college level

College Admissions Requirements Beginning in the 2014-15 academic year, each state university will only admit Ohio students who have completed the Ohio Core curriculum. –Universities exempted: Central State University Shawnee State University Youngstown State University There are exemptions for certain students.

Graduation Requirements Effective with the Class of 2014 English (4 units) Health (½ unit) & Physical Education (½ unit) Mathematics (4 units) –One unit must be at least Algebra II or its equivalent

Graduation Requirements Effective with the Class of 2014 Science (3 units) –Must be inquiry-based with laboratory experience Students ask valid scientific questions and gather and analyze information –Must include: Physical sciences (1 unit) Life Science (1 unit) 1 unit from advance sciences: –Physical science (chemistry, physics, etc.) –Life science (advanced biology, etc.) –Earth or space science (astronomy, physical geology, etc.)

Graduation Requirements Effective with the Class of 2014 Social Studies (3 units) –American history (½ unit; 1 unit required at FHS) –American government (½ unit) –Students must receive instruction in financial literacy Integrate economics and financial literacy into one or more social studies, or other, course content Currently FHS integrates this into the two sophomore required classes of Planning for College & Work and Career Explorations Financial Literacy is also offered as a semester elective from the Business Department.

Graduation Requirements Effective with the Class of 2014 Electives (5 units)* –One or any combination of the following: English language arts Mathematics Science Social studies Foreign language Fine Arts Business Career-technical education Family and consumer sciences Technology Not otherwise required * FHS graduation requirements are 6.5 units of electives

Graduation Requirements Effective with the Class of 2014 Fine Arts (2 semesters or equivalent) –Can apply to 5 electives required –Career-technical students are exempt from the fine arts requirement Student must be enrolled in and complete a course of study in career-technical education to be eligible for exemption

8 th Grade Students will be receiving a copy of the 2011-12 Program of Studies from their counselors on Jan. 30th Middle School counselors will visit your child’s US History or English classroom to conduct scheduling activities and review information contained in the Program of Studies. An electronic PDF copy of the Program of Studies may be accessed from the homepage of the Fairmont High school website. Click on the tab for “Program of Studies” on the left side of the homepage
