Spoken to us by the Son Series: Truth, Judgment and Eternity Text: Hebrews 1:1-4
2
Spoken by the Prophets Hebrews 1:1 “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways,” The writer of the Book of Hebrews opens the book by pointing the Hebrew Christians to the prophets, acknowledging that they spoke the very Word of God. The revelation the prophets received had been in part but never in full; by acknowledging the authenticity of the Old Testament prophets, the writer was able to reveal the full revelation from God, the very Word of God Himself, Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ: The Word of God John 1:1-4 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men.” John 1:14 “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” Colossians 1:15-17 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Spoken by His Son Hebrews 1:2 “but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.” John and Paul both revealed Jesus as the One whom God made the whole universe through. In these days the Word of God is spoken to us by the Son of God: the Words of Christ are prophetic for they come from God Himself. Revelation 19:10b “For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” To read the Words of Jesus Christ is to hear Words of life, words which for ages past was hidden in God who created all things. (Ephesians 3:9)

Radiating From God Hebrews 1:3 “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.” Jesus Christ is clearly revealed as the radiance of God’s glory. Jesus Christ radiates out from God, Jesus is the glory of God. He is the exact representation of His being. Jesus Christ sustains all things by His powerful Word, by His Word all things were created and by His Word all things are sustained: the fine tuned universe is tuned by the Son, the fine tuning of nature is tuned by the Son. Colossians 1:17 “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

Seated at the Father’s Side Hebrews 1:3b “After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.” This is the glory of the Gospel message, that Jesus Christ paid the heavy price for our salvation. Only the true Son of God had the purity to be an unblemished, sinless lamb and provide purification for our sins. There have been many men on earth, good men (like Job and Moses), but none were sinless, and none could bare the sin of world, only our God who created all that is by His powerful Word, and sustains all things by His powerful Word, could bare the sins of the whole world.

Name Above all Names Hebrews 1:4 “So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.” As a result, the man Jesus (God who became flesh) proved His authority to forgive sins and has inherited a name which is above every name: Paul when writing to the Philippians said, “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father”. Philippians 2:6-11

Conclusion Jesus Christ is the Word of God, He created all things by His Word and sustains all things by His Words. In the past God spoke to our forefathers by the prophets, today He speaks to us by His Son. Do we hear Him speaking to us? Are our ears attuned to the Son or are they attuned to the world? Do we live to please the Son of God and do His will or do we live to please self and do the will of the world? Jesus speaks to us today, we hear His Word in the Scriptures and we hear His Word when we seek Him in prayer.
