3 © HarperCollins Publishers 2010 Enquiry Was the partition of India in 1947 successful? He stated that Britain would leave India by June 1948. In February 1947, he appointed Lord Mountbatten (pictured on slide 1) as the new Viceroy of India. On 15 August 1947, Mountbatten granted independence to India. In 1945, Clement Attlee, Britain’s new Labour Prime Minister, promised to grant India independence.

Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the leader of the Muslims, established a new country called Pakistan. Pakistan was located in the north- east and north-west of India. Pakistan still exists today. Many Muslims feared that without partition, Indian politics would be dominated by the Hindu majority. Was the partition of India in 1947 successful?

6 © HarperCollins Publishers 2010 Enquiry Immediately before partition, there had been extreme violence between Muslims and Hindus. 10 million Hindus had to leave their homes in the new Pakistan. Thousands of Muslims and Hindus were killed. Gandhi spoke out against the killings. In 1948, a Hindu extremist shot and killed Gandhi. However, India had gained independence and full scale Civil War between Hindus and Muslims had been avoided. Was the partition of India in 1947 successful?
