Community, Culture and Mental Health Unit Head: W/Prof Aleksandar Janca Development of a screening instrument for social & emotional wellbeing among Aboriginal people - Covers 10 domains including physical and mental health, functioning and resilience - Designed to assess Aboriginal people presenting with possible mental health problems in a variety of urban, rural and remote settings Physical health in Aboriginal people with mental illness - Based on the WA Clinical Guidelines for the Physical Care of Mental Health Consumers, with main focus on the metabolic syndrome Mental health screening among reception prisoners - Aims to assess the prevalence of mental and substance use disorders in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal detainees being received into the WA prison system - Determine need and provide data relevant to culturally appropriate services for mentally disordered offenders

Unit for Research and Education in Drugs and Alcohol Head: W/Prof Gary Hulse Current studies: - Promoting smoking cessation during admissions of psychiatric patients to “smoke-free” hospitals - Subphenotypes of heroin dependence associated with treatment outcomes and genetic variants (a genome-wide association study of 2500 cases, including 897 from WA, in collaboration with Washington University, Yale University and the Queensland Institute of Medical Research) - Safety and tolerability of subcutaneous flumazenil in the treatment of benzodiazepine dependence - Biodegradability of sustained-release naltrexone implants - Liver function in patients treated with sustained-release naltrexone - Health outcomes following treatment with sustained-release naltrexone (using the WA Data Linkage System)
