Sue Foffano LCG Resource Manager WLCG – Resources & Accounting LHCC Comprehensive Review 19-20 November, 2007 LCG

sue.foffano@cern.ch 2 LCG Agenda  WLCG MoU signature status  Tier-1 and Tier-2 Accounting  Revised capacity pledges  Resources Scrutiny Group  Summary

sue.foffano@cern.ch 3 LCG WLCG MoU Signature Status  Signatures now received for all Tier-1 federations except NDGF for which 4 signatures are required:  Denmark and Finland: signatures obtained  Norway: information sent 22/10/07, awaiting reply  Sweden: intention to sign signaled 12/11/07, awaiting reply on pledge information to prepare and send  Signatures for the Tier-2 federations are progressing with recent additions including:  Estonia (CMS), Finland (CMS), Korea (ALICE) fully signed  Austria (ATLAS, CMS), Germany (ATLAS), Hungary (ALICE & CMS) in the signature process  Brazil (ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, LHCb) and Turkey (ATLAS & CMS) under discussion. Imminent ?

sue.foffano@cern.ch 4 LCG Tier-1 Accounting

sue.foffano@cern.ch 5 LCG Tier-1 Accounting  The graphs on slide 4 show a summary of CPU, Disk and Tape Storage accounting from September 2006 to September 2007 for Tier-1s and CERN.  How to interpret the graphs:  green bars show the usage of the resource, summing up all four experiments  red lines indicate installed capacity  blue dotted lines indicate the pledged capacities  Despite the increase in installed capacity the MoU pledge levels are not reached for disk and CPU.  It becomes urgent:  that 2007 commitments are fully honoured  that 2008 commitments are installed and fully in production by April 2008

sue.foffano@cern.ch 6 LCG Tier-2 Accounting  Information campaign in June amongst the Tier-2 federations informing them formal reporting of CPU usage would begin from September 2007 onwards on a monthly basis.  Test reporting took place in July and August to:  give sites an opportunity to see what their data looked like in a global context  help sites who were not reporting data to the accounting portal to do so  Of the 54 federations asked to identify sites to participate in the reporting, 4 have not yet provided this information:  Finland, Norway, Sweden, Ukraine  Of the 50 federations who provided the information:  113 sites were identified of which:  94 reported accounting data in September  101 reported accounting data in October

sue.foffano@cern.ch 7 LCG Tier-2 Accounting  The first 2 reports of data for September and October are available on the LCG web site giving details of the breakdown by federation.September October  Globally 48% of the pledged CPU was delivered in September, and 55% in October.  Work is still required to identify remaining sites, and ensure that all sites report data  federations who have not yet identified sites have been urgently requested to do so

LCG Sue.foffano@cern.ch 8 Tier-2 Accounting – October 2007  30 sites deliver 75% of the cpu  30 sites deliver 1%

LCG Sue.foffano@cern.ch 9 Revised Capacity Pledges  The 4 LHC experiments were asked to revise and update their computing requirements for 2008-2012 for July 2007  received from ATLAS in July  received from ALICE, CMS and LHCb late summer  In accordance with the MoU Tier-1 and Tier-2 federations were asked to:  confirm their pledge values for 2008  provide values for 2009-2012 inclusive  A majority of federations have not yet responded (initial deadline 28/09/07):  Tier-1s: 5/11 have responded  Tier-2s: 24/54 have responded  Pledge Tables including these responses available on LCG web Pledge Tables  From the data received so far, many pledge values for 2011 and 2012 remain as for 2010.  This is a major cause for concern, as if this trend continues there will be major discrepancies between rising requirements and pledges which do not rise as expected.

LCG Sue.foffano@cern.ch 10 Revised Capacity Pledges 2008  The table below shows the picture as we know it for 2008 from the responses received from the Tier-1 and Tier-2 federations.  The following data have been used:  Where a new pledge value was provided => new pledge  Where no information provided => old pledge  % indicates the balance between offered and required.  New pledge values will change the picture…better or worse ?

LCG Sue.foffano@cern.ch 11 Revised Capacity Pledges 2008- 2012  The table below shows the picture as we know it for 2008-2012 from the responses received from the Tier-1 and Tier-2 federations.  The following data have been used:  Where new pledge values were provided => new pledges  Where no information => last existing value reused  % indicates the balance between offered and required.  A very pessimistic picture emerges.

LCG Sue.foffano@cern.ch 12 Requirements v’s Pledges 2008-2012 for Tier-1s

LCG Sue.foffano@cern.ch 13 Requirements v’s Pledges 2008-2012 for Tier-2s

LCG Sue.foffano@cern.ch 14 Revised Capacity Pledges  It becomes urgent that all remaining federations reply as soon as possible :  confirming or updating their pledge for 2008  providing pledges for 2009-2012  a new deadline of 30/11/07 was given at the C-RRB  Federations should plan to renew their computing resources in the future to enable increased pledges to be guaranteed.

LCG Sue.foffano@cern.ch 15 Resources Scrutiny Group  Defined in Article 7 and Annexe 9 of the WLCG MoU, the RSG has now been set up.  A first meeting is expected to take place before end 2007 (10 th December 2007).  Members: William Trischuk - Canada Cristinel Diaconu - France Holger Marten - Germany Concezio Bozzi - Italy Domenec Espriu - Spain David Groep - The Netherlands Albert Lazzarini- USA Brian Vinter - Nordic Grid Jonathan Flynn - United Kingdom Jurgen Knobloch – CERN Harry Renshall – Scientific Secretary

sue.foffano@cern.ch 16 LCG Summary  WLCG MoU signature status:  Remaining NDGF signatures from Norway and Sweden needed to complete process for all Tier-1s  Follow-up of remaining Tier-2 signatures required  Tier-1 Accounting:  2007 commitments must be fully honoured and 2008 commitments must be installed and running in production by April 2008  Tier-2 Accounting:  Remaining Tier-2 sites must be identified and certain sites to be followed-up to initiate reporting and/or honour their commitments  Revised Capacity pledges:  Complete the pledge table picture following 30/11/07  Publish a new set of updated resource tables hopefully confirming improved trends  Resources Scrutiny Group  Established and will start-up 10/12/07 ready for 2008  Accounting reports and resource tables available from the planning pages of the LCG site: http://lcg.web.cern.ch/LCG/planning/planning.htmlhttp://lcg.web.cern.ch/LCG/planning/planning.html
