1 La Marseillaise By Emily and Izzy

Formez vos bataillons! Marchons! Marchons! Qu'un sang impur Abreuve nos sillons! Arise children of the fatherland The day of glory has arrived Against us tyranny's Bloody flag is raised Listen to the sound in the fields The roar of these fearsome soldiers They are coming into our midst To cut the throats of your sons and companions To arms citizens Form your battalions March, march Let impure blood Water our fields

3 Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle dedicated this song to Bavarian-born French officer Marshall Nicolas Luckner. La Marseillaise was declared the French national anthem in 1795. "Chant de guerre de l'Armee du Rhin" which means "Marching Song of the Rhine Army“ was the original name of this composition. Interesting Facts … It was made the permanent national anthem in 1879. When the troops from Marseille arrived in Paris this song was sung for the first time.

4 EVENTS AT THE TIME … The French declared war on Austria and Prussia.
Shortly after Claude wrote this song he was nearly guillotined! During the years the French revolution took place. This was when republicans overthrew the Monarchy and the Roman Catholic Church. EVENTS AT THE TIME … CAUSES OF THE REVOLUTION: Resentment of the Royals. The rise of enlightenment ideals Food scarcity in the years immediately before the revolution.

5 Theme … EVIDENCE … France is trying to scare the enemy.
“ That their impure blood shall water our fields.” France is trying to scare the enemy. “ To slaughter your sons, your companions.” Theme … EVIDENCE … The French will, one day, succeed in war “ Against us, the bloody Flag of tyranny is raised, The bloody flag is raised.”
