I think that the man carrying the sail represents the force and strength it took to row the ship. I also think that the slave in the picture is a metaphor for what the slave does for the ship. So basically, without the slaves, the ship would be useless.

I say this because the father seems to be showing the son something and they are both gazing up at the whale. It looks as if the father brought the boy there specifically to show him something. I’d like to add that the father and son figure is a repeated theme in Dali’s work.
