April 19, 20003GPP2 report 3GPP2 Steering Committee TSG-A report DRAFT Seoul, Korea April 19, 2000

3GPP2 report TSG-A status report Release A specifications: –IOS V4.0 was completed and released on January 18, 2000 (Document A.S0001) – SDO approval process completion planned for April 14, 2000 –IOS V4.0.1 will be created to include all modifications –Tandem Free Operation specification was completed on January 18, 2000 (Document A.S0004). Projecting SDO approval process completion for April 21, 2000 –Abis Technical Specification completed and released as of March 17, 2000 (Document A.S0003). SDO approval process is ongoing TSG-A is now focusing on first point release to support Release A air interface features and functions –IOS V4.1 –Release to 3GPP2 SC scheduled in the June 2000 timeframe –Will depend on whether features are fully supported in all relevant TSGs

April 19, 20003GPP2 report IOS V4.1 Definition: –Point release to support proposal from carriers and CDG –Supports top priority air interface Release A features –Includes other network features (e.g. packet data improvements) Dates: –Initial plan was to freeze baseline text at the April 10 TSG-A meeting –Now looking at May meeting to resolve all outstanding issues –Still on track for 3GPP2 release in June 2000 Status: –Most features are now stable and ready for freezing –More work required on concurrent services, assured mode packet data service, PDSN (re) selection, intergeneration handoffs

April 19, 20003GPP2 report Release B work plan Release B consists mainly of IOS V5 Technical Specification IOS V5 candidates: –Supports all Release B air interface capabilities and features –Includes a first phase IP based Access Network Technical Specification –Merges Abis and A interface architectures Schedule: –Depends on Release B air interface freezing –Depends on finalization of all IP requirements and architecture –Cut off date for requirements expected in June 2000 –Assuming air interface is stable in September, TSG-A expects to stabilize IOS V5 in the December timeframe and to release it in the March 2001 timeframe
5
April 19, 20003GPP2 report Release B contingency plan Problem: IOS V5 assumes support of All IP architecture and interfaces. The architecture may not be finalized before July 2000, making it impractical to complete the work in the desired timeframe Solutions: if this is the case, two possibilities: –1 st case: first phase IP based architecture possible IOS V5.0 based on first phase IP based access network architecture IOS V5.1 or V6.0 in 2001 for final or second phase architecture –2 nd case: no agreement on first phase IP based architecture IOS V4.2 to include other Release B features IOS V5.0 to be finalized later

April 19, 20003GPP2 report Global 3GPP2 coordination Problem: –For each yearly 3GPP2 release, each TSG’s technical specifications do not support a consistent set of capabilities –Results in an interoperability problem: Access network Inter-network Proposed solution: –Release B: Consistent set of specifications realized by only keeping minimal common set of features in all TSGs –Features not supported in ALL TSGs should be moved to Technical Report status –Future releases: rely on planned approach driven and coordinated by TSG-S
