2  Frederick Douglass was born in 1817 and died in 1895.  Frederick Douglass was a former slave who had escaped from his master disguised as a sailor. And changed his name from Bailey to Douglass in order to evade slave owners.  Douglass was always interested in getting and education and later became a writer and very fluent speaker.

3  Douglass was involved in many things including:  American Anti-Slavery Society in which he was a key leader.  He was also involved in Women’s rights.  Douglass was an activist for Irish and African- American emancipation.

4  Because Frederick Douglass was a former slave, he was very aware of how slaves were treated and was therefore against slavery.  He also believed that women should have the right to vote and should be considered equal to men.  He said "Right is of no Sex-Truth is of no Color"

5  Frederick Douglass was a writer therefore he used newspapers and his own written works to influence others.  He was also a very eloquent speaker and expressed his views this way.  He used political methods and was a follower of James G. Birney.

6  Douglass was allied with Daniel O’Connell in the fight for Irish and African-American emancipation.  Frederick Douglass was a safe house for slaves escaping through the underground railroad. His house was located in Rochester, New York; he helped the slaves escape into Canada.

7  Douglass was the first black man to hold a rank in the U.S. Government.  Douglass was the eras most noted black political activist.

8  Practical- Douglass used his newspaper the North Star which was dedicated to the abolition of slavery.

9  Douglass’ book the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (his autobiography) is still considered one of the most eloquently written books.
