2 Understanding communication choices  Communication is the process of creating and exchanging meaning through symbolic interaction.  Verbal  Non-verbal  Be aware of the message your sending  Example: dress to impress

3 Making choices  Know the context  Context: is the situation in which communication occurs  Appropriateness: what is suitable for a specific situation  Context determines roles and norms  Role: a part played in a specific setting  Norm: a stated or implied expectation  Standard: an established level of requirement or excellence  You often have to establish your own standards  What is appropriate for yourself, your listener, the occasion, and the task

4 Making choices  Appropriate for yourself  Know who you are, what you want to achieve, how you want others to perceive you  Appropriate for your listener  Consider their needs, desires, and situation  Appropriate for the occasion  Each occasion brings with it different expectations  Appropriate for the task  What are you trying to achieve?

5 Importance of communication skills  Every time you interact with another human being you are communicating  How do most of us communicate on a day to day basis?  Texting  Facebook  Email  Conversations with friends

6 Competent communicator  A competent communicator is someone who incorporates knowledge, attitudes, and skills into his or her communication to communicate effectively and appropriately.  Have the right attitude  Skills  Task skills : the skills needed to do a job  Relationship skills: the skills needed to maintain goodwill with people

7 Communication in oraginizations  Organization: a number of people with specific responsibilities who are united for the same purpose.  Could be professional or social  Culture in organizations  How a culture thinks, what it finds important, and how it conducts business  Culture shock: confusion or anxiety that sometimes results when people come into contact with a culture different with their own.  Functions of organization  Identity  Unity  Preservation

8 Elements of culture  Structure: parts of an organization  Systems: networks of channels for orderly interaction  Other communication systems in organizations: email, meeting, etc  Values and beliefs: core of organization  Goals: what you want to achieve  Environment: physical environment  Traditions: a practice or ceremony that is carried out  Heroes: a person who is respected and admired
