PROCEDURE Adverbs & Verbs The importance of verbs and adverbs when following a procedure.

What are Verbs and Adverbs?

Verbs express actions or are also called doing words. A verb can express: A physical action (e.g., to swim, to write, to climb). A mental action (e.g., to think, to guess, to consider). A state of being (e.g., to be, to exist, to appear) VERBS

Adverbs are words that modify a verb (He drove slowly. — How did he drive?) an adjective (He drove a very fast car. — How fast was his car?) another adverb (She moved quite slowly down the aisle. — How slowly did she move?) As we will see, adverbs often tell when, where, why, or under what conditions something happens or happened. Adverbs frequently end in -ly; however, many words and phrases not ending in -ly serve an adverbial function and an -ly ending is not a guarantee that a word is an adverb. The words lovely, lonely, motherly, friendly, neighbourly, for instance, are adjectives: That lovely woman lives in a friendly neighbourhood. ADVERBS

A procedure is a text that tells you how to do something. It will give you a step by step guide so that you can achieve a goal. Usually, a procedure will help you to: make something, such a recipe telling you how to make a meal use something, like a manual that tells you how to use a DVD player Written procedures, such as manuals, need to be written carefully so that the reader understands every step of the guide. Spoken procedures, such as a recipe shown by a TV chef, usually have actions that will help you understand the steps. Structure : Goals Materials Steps Language features Each instruction starts with a verb indicating the action to be taken Words or groups of words which indicate HOW, WHEN, WHERE, with WHOM
