Philippines Attacked on December 7 th, 1941 Home to Clark Airfield Navy is unable to rescue the troops Defenses on the Bataan Peninsula hold until March 1942 General Douglas Mac Arthur retreats promising, “I shall return.”

Bataan Death March Surrender in April of 1942. 76,000 American and Filipino Prisoners. Starved and weak they marched 60 miles to a railroad station. Denied water, food and were beaten and tortured. 10,000 died during the march. 15,000 more died at the prisoner camp.

Doolittle Raid April 18 th, 1942 Lt. Col. James Doolittle 16 Army B-25’s take off and bomb Tokyo. Carrier, USS Hornet Purpose: Moral for America and embarrass Japan.

Kamikaze Pilots Desperation caused the Japanese to “fight to the death.” Pilots would load down their planes to attack, then deliberately crash into American ships

Island Hopping U.S. Strategy Gain ground and gain islands Pushed north from Australia and west from Pacific. Establish and use air superiority to leapfrog toward Japan. Tarawa > Marshall Islands > Mariana Islands > Japan.
