Outline of discussion Need to strike at the heart of our problem Be sure to make a difference Industry - University partnerships key These need to be two way relationships so that both benefit

Industry Advisory Boards Offer advice on best practice in setting these up, making sure they are effective Part of this is that they must be seen to make a difference Can ACM help with through use of their Chapters in providing folk who could offer support Examples from domains (e.g. health care) of successful partnerships

Context issue Context in which computing taught important; industry can help Google, Nasa, visual arts folk (gaming) Also for better students, have industry release new ideas to institutions to experiment, to explore, to motivate

Accessing expertise Can industry supply recorded talks from experts Need to plan these very carefully - –must not embarrass teachers but support them –develop follow up material that can then be used by teachers

Research issues Interaction at research level is very important Can typically offer academia possibility of real world environments, possibility of scale, etc

Programming issue Programming - multi-core totally disruptive Danger of educating in ways that are ‘out of the ark’ Industry can supply technical expertise but not normally educational expertise
