1 Brody’s Bullying Philosophy EDU 101

2 Step #1: Multiethnic Curriculum As an aspiring History teacher, I believe much of the curriculum in schools is shown from an American point of view. I believe this can discourage active thinking and promote mental stagnation. I would aim to show views on events from global perspectives. 3 Step #2: Volunteering in the Classroom I don’t believe all bullies have one specific group they target. I believe bullying comes from inner problems that could be projected to many different groups. Thus, I believe reaching out to a number of groups is important. As a History teacher, I would include projects where my students speak with elderly people who experienced events throughout History. I believe this not only builds a respect for the elderly, but provides an influential firsthand experience of an event that you wouldn’t get from a textbook. 4 Step #3: “Mix It Up In Class Day” This is a spin on the “Mix It Up At Lunch Day,” a program becoming popular around the country. This would break down social barriers and would ideally limit bullying as people would better understand and respect each other. “Mix It Up in Class Day” would require students to sit in different places and work with different students. 5 Step #4: No-Bullying Zone I would make it clear on Day 1 of school that my classroom is a “no-bullying zone” and that violators would have consequences. I believe many bullies feel they can “get away with it.” Not in my classroom. I believe everyone has a right to education. When bullying interferes with a student’s learning by making them in the least bit uncomfortable, the bully must be held responsible. An outline on my bullying policy would be on the walls of my classroom. An outline on my bullying policy would be on the walls of my classroom.

6 My Bullying Policy The first bullying incident will result in both the bully and victim staying after class to discuss the issue with myself. The administration will also be notified so they can look out for future incidents between the two students. The administration will also be notified so they can look out for future incidents between the two students. If the bullying continues, the issue will be addressed in class. I won’t embarrass the students by saying what happened and between who, but I would use the incident to talk about other discriminatory events of similar natures throughout history and how those events are viewed today. I’d then ask the bully in private to write on what we had just discussed in class. If the bullying continues, the issue will be addressed in class. This time, the bully would then present the paper to the victim after class. Together, we would develop a plan of attack to create the most comfortable environment for both students. It would become apparent at that point that the bully may have further emotional issues that need to be dealt with professionally.
