3. Infancy Physical Development A new born baby usually weighs 6 to 8 pounds and measures 18 to 22 inches. By the end of the first year of life the weight has usually tripled. Reflex actions present at birth allow the infant to respond to the environment, by being startled, reflex to a loud noise or sudden movement

6. P.D. (Continued) At 12 months infants can walk without help and they can throw small objects. The first year the infant begins to have several teeth and has better vision than when they were first born. Their sensory abilities become more exact also.

7. Mental Development Newborns respond to discomforts such as pain, cold, or hunger by crying. As you respond to their discomforts the baby begin to recognize you and your surroundings. At birth,they are unable to talk but by 6 months they understand some words and make basic sounds. By 12 months infants understand many words and use single words in their sentences.

8. Emotional Development Emotional development is observed very early in life. Newborns show excitement. 4 to 6 months distress, delight, anger, disgust, and fear can be seen. By 12 months elation and affection for adults is evident.

9. Social Development 4 months infants recognize their caregivers, smile readily, and stare intently at others. 6 months infants watch the activities of others. 12 months infants may still be shy with strangers, but socialize freely with similar people. Infants depend on others for all needs. Love and security are essential for emotional & social growth.
