4 Attach Bulletin #1 September 3, 2014 Dear 8 th Graders and Families, As British subjects, loyal to the king of England, what would cause the American colonists to travel down the dangerous road of rebellion and independence? We will discuss the rights all people have and the view that a function of government is to protect these rights. We will also explore what should happen if a government is destructive of these rights. How did these beliefs influence the colonial mindset about government and allegiance to the Mother Country? Finally, we will understand the growing tensions between the colonies and England which eventually led to war and American independence. Our Enduring Understandings for this unit are:  People have natural rights and governments are created to protect these rights.  When government is destructive of the natural rights of men, the people have the right and duty to overthrow that government.  Governing documents reflect the values of the society. As your son or daughter learns about the colonies’ trip towards and down the Road towards Revolution, discuss how growing up is much like this experience. England was the “mother” country and the colonies her children. As the colonies moved from infancy to adolescence, what changed? How is this similar to the journey your son or daughter is traveling? Look for more Hot Lines about our study of American history this year. We hope you enjoy sharing your child's explorations. Parent signature by Monday.
