Organization Online Group created Charges “The online group is responsible of making sure the software and disposition of information available in the control room allows efficient data taking and enough online information to verify data quality as it is taken and immediately after” Composition Detector DAQ : J.S Graulich (Group Leader) Control and Monitoring: J. Leaver & P. Hanlet Online Reconstruction: L. Coney MLCR Manager: C. MacWaters MICE CM January 2009Jean-Sébastien GraulichSlide 2

Control and Monitoring Controls & Monitoring Leader (J. Leaver): Identify control requirements of each section of MICE Decide on most appropriate solution Coordinate the effort of those involved in implementing agreed solution Define work packages to be undertaken by DL or other appropriate groups in the Collaboration DL remain in charge of EPICS infrastructure - and continue to be most important EPICS resource Pierrick Hanlet will focus on Monitoring Archiving of existing data (Magnets, etc) Unified Monitoring panel MICE CM January 2009Jean-Sébastien GraulichSlide 3

Individual Project Status Updates Decay Solenoid & Cryogenic System Several upgrades, including: Automatic operation sequences, Remote monitoring of the fridge via a web interface, additional vacuum monitoring & interlocks,... Hydrogen System Special training and evaluation of technical solutions have started Fermilab Beam Position Monitors FNAL BPM software complete Used for calibration after the noise problem fixed last month Tracker AFEIIt configuration, control & monitoring software complete Successfully tested with DATE using Tracker 1 cosmic ray stand Finalisation of DATE integration details required James Leaver - Imperial College

Target CAM Target Control Design of extra monitoring & interlocks for Target Chiller complete Addition of a “dip permit” derived from combination of Personnel Safety & temperature monitoring interlocks Target Monitoring Target dip depth ISIS signals (Beam Losses, Beam Position, etc…) MICE CM January 2009Jean-Sébastien GraulichSlide 5

Target Beam Loss Monitors BLM IOC supplies interface to data archive written by local DAQ Clients provide virtual scope display, history plots & analysis Functionally complete Refinements in progress Pierrick Hanlet - Fermilab DAQ

CAM Suggested Improvements Currently have a collection of EPICS-compatible subsystems need to combine into single integrated control system Use Alarm Handler Standard EPICS tool that can warn operators of dangerous/abnormal conditions (if properly configured) Input from MICE community: which systems/parameters should trigger alarms? Extend use of Archiver Presently used for cryo monitoring - not yet widely used elsewhere Input from MICE community: which parameters should be archived? Further use of web interfaces for remote monitoring Scripting languages for automation Perl, Python, Tcl/Tk, etc. Above all, make use of the vast range of existing EPICS solutions – DON’T REINVENT THE WHEEL! Brian Martlew - Daresbury Laboratory

Detector DAQ Progress since CM22 TOF1 included in the DAQ and in the trigger New flashADC (500MHz) installed for CKOV Computer Clock synchronization fixed Not 100% satisfactory: PCs are synchronized to each other but not to the outside world (firewall issue) Progress has been slower than foreseen Known issues Limit on the number of particle events From DAQ and from Online Monitoring ( about 40 Particles/Spill ) Not expected and needs more investigations Event reconstruction Recent, dramatic, unexpected mismatch between the number of particle triggers in the two crates (for some runs) -> Serious Event building problem ! Interface with EPICS becomes a top priority MICE CM January 2009Jean-Sébastien GraulichSlide 9

Online Software Unpacking library needs upgrade New fADC (V1731) for CKOV New version to be distributed next week Interface with G4MICE First task is to reproduce online histograms (David Adey) See Software session for more details Know issues Online monitoring GUI tends to get stalled at the end of a run Online monitoring histograms are not labeled according to detector names That is a feature! Need better Online plots for fADC Current plots found not efficient in detecting broken channels Not straight forward task (fluctuating baseline) MICE CM January 2009Jean-Sébastien GraulichSlide 10

MICE CM January 2009Jean-Sébastien GraulichSlide 11 FEE Issues Cross Talk Issue Affect TOF stations New design is under study FADC firmware upgrade Needed for significant reduction of data volume Less samples per Particle event (currently 512 whereas only 60 are necessary Zero suppression (to be tested) Delicate operation Splitter/Shaper Production for TOF2 Board production is finished in Sofia Discrete components are in hand in Geneva Mounting will start in February Missing TDC/fADC for TOF2 Should be ordered by Ludovico/Maurizio (funding issues) FEE for EMR (aka SW) Technical design approved by TB

MICE CM January 2009Jean-Sébastien GraulichSlide 13 Outline -------------- DDAQ ------------------- TOF1 has been integrated into DAQ, Trigger and OLM CKOV readout has been upgraded Many recent milestones have been missed Serious problem with event building discovered Target DAQ is about to be integrated to Detector DAQ FEE for SW/EMR and TOF2 are priority tasks -------------- CAM --------------------- Good progress with individual projects Need concerted effort to integrate all existing systems into a coherent whole, using existing EPICS tools wherever possible Need to agree upon what additional controls/monitors are required and establish standard routines for initiating & coordinating new work Any help & suggestions from the MICE community are most welcome -------------- ALL ---------------------- Work plan is drawn to have all the current issues solved before May for Step II
