At the end of this session students will: List the typical input devices Identify the types of input devices List their characteristics List their uses Perform the AFL with 100% accuracy
3
Define the term Data Capture in one sentence. What device is used in the capture of data? Define the term input device in one sentence What is the main function of an input device? At what stage in the data processing cycle would input devices be used?
4
Listed below are six (6) categories of Input devices: Standard Input Devices Pointing Input Devices Gaming Input Devices Scanning Input Devices Audio and Video Input Devices Other Input Devices
5
The keyboard is also known as the standard input. It is the most common input device It is connected to the computer via wires or wireless There are two types of keyboards: ◦ Alphanumeric keyboards Alphanumeric keyboards ◦ Special function keyboards Special function keyboards
6
This keyboard contains letters, numbers and symbols in particular layouts This type of keyboard is modeled after the typewriter and referred to as a QWERTY Keyboard.
7
Invented for a specific purpose. Four such keyboards are : ◦ Braille Keyboard Braille Keyboard ◦ Concept Keyboard Concept Keyboard ◦ Left-handed Keyboard Left-handed Keyboard ◦ Virtual/Projection Keyboard Virtual/Projection Keyboard
8
Keys are marked with raised dots Used to aid those that are visually impaired
9
Contains a flatbed of contact switches covered by a flexible membrane. Each switch contains has whole words, symbols or pictures This keyboard is used in: ◦ education as an early-learning aid ◦ Restaurants ◦ Places where there is a lot of mess
10
Designed for left handed individuals
11
Keyboard is projected unto any surface and touched Finger movements are registered and translated into keystroke. Example of where it is used - Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs)
12
These devices are used by operating systems with Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) They control the motion of the pointer/cursor They aid in the selection of objects Examples : Mouse Mouse Digitising tablet Digitising tablet Touch-sensitive screen Touch-sensitive screen Light pen Light pen
13
Its movement on flat surfaces is mirrored by the pointer on the monitor The buttons on the mouse allows for selections, movement of objects and painting or drawing There are five types of mice five types
14
under it is a ball which rolls and turns in two shafts, one for each direction.
15
slides over most surfaces. Doesn’t have a ball. Emits a small beam of read light which bounces off the surface into the sensor. Sensor sends coordinates to the computer. The computer moves the cursor/pointer on the monitor
16
Has a large ball on the top. You roll the ball with the palm of your hand Buttons are placed close by allowing you to select features
17
Found on laptops Looks like a pencil eraser It pertrudes from the keyboard between the letters B, g AND H keys.
18
Contains a touch-sensitive pad It is a pressure and motion sensitive flat surface of about 5cm x 5cm You move your fingers over to control the cursor/pointer on the screen. Buttons are placed close To the surface allowing For the selection of Features on the screen
19
Converts analogue form to digital form It consists of a tablet –board which can detect the position of a pointing device A stylus – pen like pointing device A puck –mouse like device Cross hairs- to position it accurately Buttons – to perform varied actions
20
Allows for interaction by touching the screen The pointer is the human finger Three forms of touch screen: ◦ Pressure-sensitive ◦ Capacitive surface ◦ Light beam These screens are used by banks on ATMs
21
a pointer that when pointed at a computer display senses whether or not the spot is illuminated A small, photosensitive device connected to a computer and moved by hand over an output display in order to manipulate information in the.
