3. © International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Page 3  What advantage does it give me to do IB Physics over OSSD Physics?

4. © International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Page 4  Most universities recognize the value of an IB education.  Universities (around the world) typically pre-accept IB students as they know it is externally moderated and has a HIGH level of standards that are evaluated.  The external moderation ensures any IB student comes out of the programme with the same background and expertise.

5. © International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Page 5  The work level and pace better prepares students for post-secondary education.  The IB Final Exam is worth 76% of their final mark – some university exams are worth 100% and students are never prepared for that as the maximum Ontario exam is 30%.  Lab formats closely follow University guidelines (I use a format similar to McMaster).

6. © International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Page 6  Throughout the course’s development, the international flavour as outlined throughout the IB process will be investigated.  Historical development of the theories outlined will clearly demonstrate the international contributions to the theory looked at.

7. © International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Page 7  The curriculum in SL or even HL covers more physics and has a stronger application connection.  Students become better problem solvers.  This ensures better preparation for Engineering or Physics post- secondary studies.

8. © International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Page 8  Follows IB syllabus and the Ontario Curriculum is seeded throughout.  The goal is that students in 3U IB will come out of the course with the 3U Ontario requirements.  The Ontario curriculum dictates option choices, in fact some Options are covered as extra to ensure Ontario curriculum is covered.  NO DISADVANTAGE FOR IB PHYSICS!

9. © International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Page 9  Many programs in University don’t REQUIRE physics but they make you take it when you get there!!  Why pay for it when you get it in high school for less AND it frees up the University schedule!!  Medicine requires Physics, some Life Sciences will as well (Biophysics), Psychology courses may require it: check it out!!

10. © International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Page 10  My daughter will be an IB graduate this year and I really felt compelled to say that all the hard work has really prepared her for life, not just college. She is one of the school’s leaders in GPA,…, Debate, Sports, multiple clubs.. I truly believe that the IB opportunity has stimulated that potential in, and future opportunity for, my daughter.  Bart McCormick – IB student parent

12. © International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Page 12 IB – The first semester  It’s hard!  Grade 11 is a big transition for all students.  There are new expectations and it is more difficult to get the same results as in grade 10.  Life is becoming busier, there are more social, school, and sometimes family obligations to attend to.  Time management becomes VERY important!

14. © International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Page 14 IB – The first semester  Be involved.  Ask how things are going on a regular basis.  Be proactive when helping them plan/schedule.  Provide time for study and homework (sometimes you have to do without them).  Encourage them when they get down.  Don’t get caught up in each individual mark, focus on the PROCESS – “how did you prepare for that assessment”.  Help them set short term AND long term goals for IB.

16. © International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Page 16 IB – The first semester  The IB Diploma Programme is a 2 year program.  Students will have to get used to the NEW way of doing things.  Students are working TOWARDS their internal assessments and final exams.  It is expected that there will be a learning curve.  There will be more time consuming activities to contend with.  IB evaluations have band widths – they are not directly converted to % grades.

18. © International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Page 18 IB – The first semester  All our information says – It is worth it.  What they are experiencing is normal for grade 11 students.  Emotionally - They will be BETTER prepared to handle the challenges and stress of first year university.  Academically – They will be BETTER able to succeed in first year courses.  Flexibility – They will have the ability to use any advanced standing credits when it makes sense for them.
