THIS BATTLE WAS FOUGHT AT THE BORDER OF EGYPT AND LIBYA AT EL ALAMEIN. LATER, THE BRITISH WOULD WIN THIS BATTLE. NAZIS—BLACK. BRITISH—YELLOW.

THE BATTLE OF CRUCIFIX HILL FRANCE THE ENCOUNTER SHOWN TO THE RIGHT IS THE BATTLE OF CRUCIFIX HILL. AS YOU CAN SEE, THE AMERICANS (RIGHT) HAD LESS PROTECTION THAN THE NAZIS (LEFT) DID, WHO WERE BEHIND SANDBAGS. NEVERTHELESS, THE AMERICANS STILL WON.

THE BATTLE FOR IWO JIMA ISLAND FAR OFF THE COAST OF JAPAN THE BATTLE SHOWN ON THE RIGHT WAS THE BATTLE FOR IWO JIMA. THE AMERICANS (DARK GREEN) AND THE JAPANESE (LIGHT GREEN) FOUGHT A VICIOUS DEADY BATTLE. ON THE BOTTOM LEFT CORNER, ONE CAN SEE THE MARINES RAISING THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER (THE AMERICAN FLAG) ON MOUNT SURIBACHI. DIAGONALLY RIGHT, YOU CAN SEE A PLATOON OF SURRENDERING JAPANESE ESCORTED BY SOME ARMED AMERICAN MARINES. AS THE AMERICANS ADVANCED ON TO THE JAPANESE PILLBOXES, THEY RECEIVED HEAVY CASUALTIES. THE WAY THE DESTROYED THE PILLBOXES WAS EITHER WITH FLAMETHROWERS OR NORMAL GUNS. THIS BATTLE WOULD BE ONE OF AMERICA’S MANY VICTORIES.

THE BATTLE OF CHERBOURG FRANCE CHERBOURG WAS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FRENCH PORTS THAT WERE TAKEN IN THE INVASION OF NORMANDY. THE AMERICANS (RIGHT) FOUGHT HARD FOR IT AND WON. THAT BATTLE ALSO INCLUDED A SIEGE. NAZIS—LEFT.

WORLD WAR ll FOR SIX YEARS, THE ALLIED ARMIES (UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, GREAT BRITAIN, SOVIET UNION, FRANCE, AND THE COMMONWEALTH) FOUGHT THE AXIS ARMIES (NAZI GERMANY, FACIST ITALY, AND IMPERIAL JAPAN.) THE ALLIED ARMIES FOUGHT AT MANY FRONTS. THE ATLANTIC FRONT, THE PACIFIC FRONT, THE EASTERN FRONT, THE WESTERN FRONT, THE ITALIAN FRONT, AND MANY MORE. IN AFRICA, THE NAZI AFRIKAKORPS, LED BY ERWIN “DESERT FOX,” ROMMEL, STORMED ACROSS AFRICA WINNING VICTORY BY VICTORY UP UNTIL EL ALAMEIN WHEN BRITISH GENERAL, BERNARD “MONTY,” MONTGOMERY, DEFEATED HIM. THE STRATEGY MONTGOMERY USED WAS TO USE ALL OF ROMMEL’S FUEL, AND THEN FIRE AT THE SOLDIERS AND THE FUEL-LESS TANKS. IN THE PACIFIC, THE IMPERIAL JAPANESE ARMY TAKES OVER ISLAND BY ISLAND, UNTIL THEY WAKE UP THE SLEEPING GIANT, THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. THE AMERICANS AND THE CANADIENS TAKE BACK THE ISLANDS BY ISLAND JUMPING. FROM GUADALCANAL TO THE MARSHALL ISLANDS, FROM PELELIU TO OKINAWA, THE USA WON BATTLES, TO EVENTUALLY CAUSE JAPAN TO SURRENDER AFTER HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI. ON JUNE 4-6, 1944, THE AMERICANS, THE CANADIENS, AND THE BRITISH LANDED AT NORMANDY, FRANCE AT 5 CODENAMED BEACHES. OMAHA, GOLD, JUNO, SWORD, AND UTAH. THAT INVASION WAS OPERATION OVERLORD, MORE COMMONLY KNOWN AS D-DAY, OR THE INVASION OF NORMANDY. THAT INVASION FREED FRANCE FROM THE NAZIS THROUGHT MANY BATTLES, SUCH AS BATTLE OF THE BULGE, BATTLE OF CHERBOURG, BATTLE OF CAEN, THE BATTLE OF CRUCIFIX HILL AND MANY MORE. AFTER SIX YEARS OF COSTLY BATTLES, THE AXIS FORCES SURRENDERED TO THE ALLIES. THE NAZIS SURRENDERED ON MAY 8, 1945, TWO DAYS AFTER ADOLF HITLER’S SUICIDE ON MAY 6, 1945. THE JAPANESE SURRENDERED ON AUGUST 6, 1945, ON THE USS MISSOURI THE SECOND WORLD WAR WAS FILLED BY MILLIONS OF FALLEN ON ALL SIDES. EVERY ARMY FOUGHT FOR THEIR FREEDOMS, RIGHTS, AND POWER. THROUGHOUT THE WAR, MILLIONS DIED. AND FOR EACH MILLION, MORE THAN TWICE THAT NUMBER FELL INTO CRATERS OF SORROW.
