Naming Ionic Compounds
2
What is a compound? A compound is a pure substance consisting of two or more different elements There are two types of compounds: Covalent Ionic
3
Name the following ionic compounds: NaCl __________________ CaI 2 __________________ Li 2 SO 4 ___________________________ FeO __________________ Cu(NO 3 ) 2 ___________________________ Having trouble??? Use this flowchart to help you discover how to name these compounds!flowchart
4
Ionic Compounds Name the cation Forms one (+) ion Use element name Forms more than one (+) ion Use element name and Roman numeral Name the anion Single ion Use element name and add –ide ending Polyatomic ion Use name of polyatomic ion Ready to practice?
5
Ionic Compounds Ionic compounds are composed of a metal and a non-metal Metals are located to the left of the stair-step Metals Go back to flowchart Ready to practice? Non-metals
6
Cations A cation is a positively (+) charged ion Metals are cations To form a cation, a metal atom lose one or more electrons Go back to flowchartReady to practice? Li 3 p + e- Neutral Li atom has 3 p + and 3 e- (+3) + (-3) = 0 (no charge) Li 3 p + e- A lithium ion has 3 p + and 2 e- (+3) + (-2) = +1
7
Anions An anion is a negatively (−) charged ion Non-metals are anions To form an anion, a non-metal gains one or more electrons Go back to flowchartReady to practice? O 8 p + e- Neutral O atom has 8 p + and 8 e- (+8) + (-8) = 0 (no charge) An oxygen ion has 8 p + and 6 e- (+8) + (-6) = -2 e- O 8 p + e-
8
Fixed-Charge Ions Most metals form cations with a single charge For example: Li +, Mg 2+, Cl -, O 2- You can find these charges using group numbers Go back to flowchart Ready to practice?
9
Variable Charges Some transition metals can form cations with more than one charge ElementCharges Copper (Cu)2+, 3+ Lead (Pb)2+, 4+ Chromium (Cr)2+, 3+ Iron (Fe)2+, 3+ Tin (Sn)2+, 4+ Go back to flowchart Ready to practice?
10
Naming Cations with a Fixed Charge When naming a cation with a fixed charge, simply say the element’s name The element name can be found on the periodic table Go back to flowchart Ready to practice?
11
Naming Cations with a Variable Charge To name a cation with a variable charges, use a Roman numeral to indicate the charge Examples: Go back to flowchart Ready to practice? IonName Cu 2+ Copper (II) Pb 4+ Lead (IV) Fe 3+ Iron (III)
12
Monatomic Ions A monatomic ion is an ion that is made of only one atom Examples: Na +, Ca 2+, Cl -, S 2- Go back to flowchart Ready to practice?
13
Polyatomic Ions A polyatomic ion is an ion made up of more than one type of atom Examples: SO 4 2-, NO 2 -, PO 4 3- Go back to flowchart Ready to practice?
14
Naming Single Anions To name a single anion use the root of the element name and add the ending –ide Go back to flowchart Ready to practice? Chlor ine + -ide Chloride root
15
Naming Polyatomic Anions To name polyatomic anions, use the name of the polyatomic ion Go back to flowchart Ready to practice? These ions usually end in -ate or -ite
16
Name the following ionic compounds: NaCl __________________ CaI 2 __________________ Li 2 SO 4 ___________________________ FeO __________________ Cu(NO 3 ) 2 ___________________________ Go back to flowchartCheck your answers!
17
Check Your Answers! NaClsodium chloride CaI 2 calcium iodide Li 2 SO 4 lithium sulfate FeOiron (II) oxide Cu(NO 3 ) 2 copper (II) nitrate
