1 Topic: Circulatory System
Aim: Explain the function and structure of the circulatory system. Do Now: Multiple Choice question (take out your numbers) HW: Respiratory System Reading notes due Monday Digestive and Circulatory Castle Learning due Wednesday

2 The main function of the digestive system is to
rid the body of cellular waste materials process organic molecules so they can enter cells break down glucose in order to release energy change amino acids into proteins and carbohydrates

3 What is the primary function of the large intestine?
To digest proteins To absorb nutrients To break down complex carbohydrates To remove water from undigested waste

4 Largest and most muscular blood vessels. The smallest blood vessels.
Identify the blood vessel being described (A, V or C). Largest and most muscular blood vessels. The smallest blood vessels. Capillaries carry blood to these blood vessels. Blood vessel used to feel your pulse. Carry blood to other organs. Where the exchange of substances between the blood and cells occurs. Most of these carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart. Contain valves to prevent the backflow of blood. Carry blood under high pressure. Red blood cells travel move in single file.

5

6 Function TRANSPORT substances throughout the body

7 Where is oxygen transported?
Where are wastes transported? What other substances are transported by the circulatory system?

8 Heart Facts Hold out your hand and make a fist. If you're a kid, your heart is about the same size as your fist, and if you're an adult, it's about the same size as two fists. Your heart beats about 100,000 times in one day and about 35 million times in a year. During an average lifetime, the human heart will beat more than 2.5 billion times.

9 Heart Cardiac muscle

10 R L

11 Parts of the heart ISN questions # 5

12 Atria: Upper chambers Receive blood R and L

13 2. Ventricles: Lower chambers Pump blood out of heart R & L

14 Which chambers are more muscular? Atria or ventricles? Why?

15 Thicker & muscular bc pump blood to rest of body

16 3. Septum = thick wall that separates right & left sides

17

18 4. Valves = flaps of tissue bw atria and ventricles
Prevent backflow of blood

19 Lub Dub If you listen to your heartbeat, it makes a lub dub sound. What you hear is the sound of the valves closing as they pump 4,300 gallons of oxygen rich blood a day.

20 Left atrium Valves Left Ventricle Right Atrium Right Ventricle Valves

21

22 Blood flow in the heart ISN questions #’s 2, 4, 1, 3

23 Right side: deoxygenated blood
To the LUNGS Left side: oxygenated blood From LUNGS To all body parts

24 RIGHT (deoxygenated) LEFT (oxygenated)

25 Blood pumped on each side of the heart DOES NOT MIX!!

26 Blood vessels attached to the heart
Vena Cava: Carry DB from the body to the right side of the heart Blood vessels attached to the heart

27

28 Pulmonary arteries: carry DB to the lungs
Pulmonary veins: carry OB from the lungs back to the left side of the heart

29

30 AORTA Is the aorta attached to the right or left side?
So what kind of blood does it carry? Where does this blood go?

31 Aorta: largest artery in the body
Carries OB from the left side of the heart to the rest of the body.

32

33 Right atrium (DB) Right ventricle (DB) Pulmonary arteries (DB) Lungs (OB) Pulmonary Veins (OB) Left atrium (OB) Left ventricle (OB) Aorta (OB) Rest of the body Vena Cava (DB)

34 Let’s summarize… Explain the function of the circulatory system. Describe the four chambers of the heart. Explain the importance of heart valves. Why is the septum so important? Where is deoxygenated blood pumped to? Where is oxygenated blood pumped to?

35 10 - aorta Suerior vena cava 3- Pulmonary arteries
6 - Pulmonary veins 2- Pulmonary veins 8- left ventricle 7- right ventricle 1- Inferior vena cava

36

37

38 Review: Identify the part of the heart being described.
Chamber that receives oxygenated blood. Wall that separates the right and left side of the heart. Chamber that pumps out deoxygenated blood. Chamber that receives deoxygenated blood. Prevents the backflow of blood between atria and ventricles. Chamber that pulps out oxygenated blood.

39

40 Atherosclerosis

41

42 Autopsy specimen of aorta has been opened lengthwise to reveal luminal surface studded with lesions of atherosclerosis.

43 Coronary atherosclerosis

44 Hypertension

45

46 Coronary Thrombosis

47 Heart attack Caused by BLOCKAGE of coronary artery O2 does not get to heart muscle
