Many thanks to Chris for his work over the seasons. Alan Beddis is heading up the Annual dinner for this season, being held at Kingston Park on Thursday 22 nd January 2015. Law 10 Foul Play, law 10.4 Dangerous play and misconduct a)Punching or Striking. A player must not strike or punch an opponent with the fist or arm, including the elbow, shoulder, head or knee(s). Does you statement state clearly that you saw that occur ?????? Clarification re law breached. Consider using “Points to prove” approach. Example:- During your game you see Red 5 punch blue 3 with clenched fist in the face. You make a loud whistle signal, stop time, call Red 5 over and issue red cad. Should be recording on your card, the time, score, red card issued and who too. (You might get the name there and then or choose to do it later.) Once home and preparing the report - Get your law book out. Find the offence and write your statement re that law, hence covering the “point to prove” as per the offence, which will make sure your report is clear for Malcolm and the panel.

5. Law 8.1 Advantage A/. The referee is sole judge of whether or not a team has gained an advantage. The referee has wide discretion when making decisions. B/. Advantage can be territorial or tactical. C/. Territorial advantage means a gain in ground. D/. Tactical advantage means freedom for non-offending team to play the ball as they wish.

6. Advantage Law 8.2 When Advantage Does Not Arise The advantage must be clear and real. A mere opportunity to gain advantage is not enough. If the non-offending team does not gain an advantage, the referee blows the whistle and brings play back to the place of infringement.

7. Advantage Law 8.3 When The Advantage Law Is Not Applied A/. Referee Contact Advantage must not be applied when the ball, or a player carrying it, touches the referee. B/. Ball out of Tunnel Advantage must not be applied when the ball comes out of either end of the tunnel at a scrum without being played. C/.Wheeled Scrum Advantage must not be applied when the scrum is wheeled through more than 90 degrees. D/. Collapsed scrum Advantage must not be applied when a scrum collapses. Whistle must be blown immediately. E/. Player lifted in the air Must not be applied if player in the scrum is lifted or forced upwards. Must blow immediately. F/. After ball made dead Advantage can’t be played after the ball has been made dead.

8. Advantage To play or not play advantage along with how long should advantage be played comes from many factors. Temperament of the game Skill level of the players Weather and field conditions. Are just a few examples

9. Advantage Example Clip 1. Gain in advantage from a minor infringement that would have led to a scrum restart. Example Clip 2. No gain in advantage and so play brought back for the minor infringement. Example Clip 3. Advantage being played and gained from a penalty infringement. Example Clip 4. Advantage being played but no gain so back for the penalty. Example Clip 5. Great example of advantage being used with multiple infringements.

10. Advantage Referee should always signal with their arm that they have seen the infringement, but they should evaluate whether advantage can be played before saying advantage. Here is a great clip of the referee doing just that

11. Advantage Now your turn, We are now going to look at a series of clips and review the use of advantage with three questions in mind. Questions 1. Should advantage have been played ? Yes or No. (Did the team have a chance to gain an advantage ? If not then advantage shouldn’t be played. Question 2. If you thought advantage should be played, then do you think advantage was gained, Yes or No ? Question 3. If you think advantage should be played, then did the referee play advantage correctly Yes or No ? If your answer is no then say why. Did the referee play to long or not long enough? (And we are using a base line advantage when answering yes or no because we don’t know what factors the referee is dealing with or options he is considering).

12. Advantage How we going to approach………….. Your game is Blue v’s Red. Blue are the more skilful side and are dominating Red in every aspect of the game. A rare Red play gets into the Blue half and following a tackle a ruck develops. Blue 7 is the tackler and fails to roll away. Out goes your arm and you call “Advantage – Penalty” “Blue 7 – Not rolling away”. You heard a clear shout “We’ll take the penalty” from behind you and see Red 9 throw the ball forward.
