Lesson 5 Vocabulary – Due Thursday 10/9

Magnet – an object made of iron, nickel, or cobalt or a combination of these materials and that has the ability to attract or repel other magnetic materials. Magnetism – a force of attraction or repulsion that acts at a distance. Attraction (Attract) – to pull or draw near by physical force

Cross out dimagnetic and paramagnetic if you have not done so already. Magnetic Pole – one of the two ends of a magnet (one is a north-seeking pole and the other is a south- seeking pole) Repulsion – to push away, the opposite of attract. Constant – a condition that is not changed in a scientific experiment. Fair Test – a controlled, scientific experiment.

Lesson 6 Vocabulary – Due Tuesday 10/14

Compass – a navigational instrument that shows directions in a frame of reference that is stationary relative to the surface of the Earth. Direction – the line or course on which something is moving or is aimed to move or along which something is pointing or facing Magnetic compass – a device that determines the presence and direction of a magnetic field

Earth’s magnetism – a magnetic field that extends from the Earth’s interior Magnetic field – a space or area in which magnetic forces can be observed. If a magnetic field exists in an area, magnetic forces will deflect a compass needle that is placed in that area.
