Comparatives and superlatives Quick review
2
Superlative The superlative describes how something is THE best, most, least, worst, etc. Because of this, the superlative must begin with an article (el, la, los, las). The object/noun is optional. (The pizza is the best food; Percy is the bravest character.) It cannot be a name! más = most; menos = least The adjective always comes at the very end of the superlative phrase.
3
Superlative La cocina es el cuarto más limpio de la casa. article— ”the” Noun—in this case, the kitchen is not just any room, it’s the cleanest room of the house. más and menos are your only options if there is an adjective. adjective at end—must agree with the noun.
4
Superlative Remember that the ADJECTIVE ALWAYS come AFTER the NOUN. Break the superlative into two parts: cuarto limpio EL cuarto MÁS limpio casa única LA casa MÁS única
5
Superlative special case Still must contain an article (“the”)—el/la/los/las Use MEJOR or PEOR. There is NO other adjective! MEJOR and PEOR (best, worst) are adjectives. Saying simple “el mejor” or “el peor” to describe someone or something is a superlative.
6
Comparative In essence… Más [adjective or noun] que Menos [adjective or noun] que Mejor(es) que (nothing between the words) Peor(es) que (nothing between the words)
7
Be careful… If you use an article (el/la/los/las), it MUST be a superlative. If you use “que” (than), it MUST be a comparative. In other words, an article and “que” can never go together.
