3 Day in the life of 2010: Ubiquitous student Characters: Students Alice and Bob 08:00 Alice oversleeps for her 8AM class, so Bob sends her an alert (Instant Messaging) 08:10 Alice runs to school, and uses her phone to buy orange juice from a vending machine (M-commerce) 08:20 Alice rushes to the classroom, but finds it empty. However, there is an electronic post-it from Bob, telling her about a class field trip to a museum (E-Post-it) 08:30 Alice uses her phone to find the nearest bus-stop and download the schedule (Location-based Bus Schedule Service) 08:40 Alice gets on the arriving bus and uses her pays using her phone (M-commerce). During the ride, Alice reads personalized news about student activities, finances, entertainment, etc. on her phone (Personal Intelligence Network)

4 Day in the life of 2010: Ubiquitous student (Part II) 09:00 The bus arrives at the museum where Alice buys a ticket using her phone (M-commerce) 09:10 Entering the museum, Alice receives an E-Post-it from the museum containing a map and tour schedule (E-Post-it). Her phone also receives an E-Post-it from Bob telling her where he is (E-Post-it with changing data: Bob's location) 09:20 Alice uses the museum map to meet up with the class 09:30 As Alice and the class tour the museum, facts about paintings in their immediate vicinity are provided as E-Post- its on their phones (E-Post-it) 11:00 As they approach the souvenir store, the museum sends them an E-Post-it coupon (E-Post-it)

5 Day in the life of 2010: Ubiquitous student (Part III) 12:00 Alice and her friends use instant messaging on their phones to set up a lunch in one of the ten museum cafes (Instant Messaging) 14:00 On her way home, Alice passes by Safeway and her phone beeps to remind her that her roommate wanted some Fruit Loops cereal (Location-based Shopping Notification) 14:05 As Alice walks in her phone beeps to indicate that a friend is within 50 meters. Her phone shows the name of an old high school friend. Looking around, Alice spots Susie and greets her with excitement! (Buddy-alert) 14:15 Alice finds the Fruit Loops, picks up nonfat milk and some fruits, and pays for everything using her phone (M- Commerce) 17:00 Alice arrives at her home, and uses her phone to open the door (Electronic door-key)

Thinking quickly, Paul presses the “rebook flight” button on his phone (Instant Messaging and Infrastructure-based applications). 06:31 An infrastructure-based application looks at his calendar, contacts the airline, and sends him a message with alternative flights. Paul selects the 07:00 flight and is booked on it (Instant Messaging). 06:35 While waiting, Paul uses his phone to retrieve up-to-date info onto his laptop (High-speed Data Retrieval) –Calendar, client news, new competitors, new deals, stocks, weather, etc.

8 Day in the life of 2010: Traveling salesperson (Part II) 06:45 Paul uses his phone to send update arrival info to the other salespersons that he’s meeting and the client 09:30 Paul arrives in the new city and as he deplanes, he gets a calendar alert with his new schedule (Instant Messaging). His calendar automatically shows the current time zone 09:35 Paul uses his phone to rent a car (M-Commerce) and to obtain current directions, based upon construction and traffic (Location-based Information) 17:00 On the way to the airport, Paul shops for a gift for his spouse, by calling an automated shopping app that matches his interests with local specialty stores offering the best deals at convenient locations (Voice-based Access to Personal Preferences and Location-based Services) 19:00 Paul uses his video phone to talk to his kids before boarding the plane (Video over Wireless)

11 Day in the life of 2010: Retired Tourists (Part II) 14:02 Jane instructs the Companion to conference in an emergency service and perform automatic English  Russian translation (Voice-based Access to Infrastructure Services) –Jane requests an ambulance –Companion contacts home physician and forwards Bob’s medical records 15:00 Jane uses location tracking to find Bob’s ambulance and meets up with him as he arrives at the hospital (Location-based Services) 15:45 Bob and Jane’s friends (traveling in a group with them) join them at the hospital when they hear about Bob’s condition (Buddy Alerts)
