Chunking By Sarah Barron
3
The Aim Of The Presentation The aim of this presentation is to teach others the division method of chunking in 4 simple steps. I hope you understand it! It is called ‘chunking’ because you ‘take easy chunks’ out of the starting number.
4
#1 Say you have this sum: 172 divided by 4. Write 172 at the top of your page. / 4 = 25 Think of an easy multiple of 4 which is close to, but lower than 172 like 100 and write it underneath 172. (This is your first ‘chunk’.) Next to 100 write… divided by 4 = 25. Then draw a line underneath. 172 - 100 (Click mouse to continue.)
5
/ 4 = 25 172 - 100 #2 Next subtract 100 from 172. You should get 72. Write 72 underneath. 72 Think again of an easy multiple of 4 which is close to, but lower than 72, like 40, and write it underneath 72. (This is your second ‘chunk’.) - 40 As before write… divided by 4 = 10. Then continue. / 4 = 10 32 Nearly there!.. (Click mouse to continue.)
6
- 100 / 4 = 25 172 #3 Now use your times tables to divide 32 by 4. 72 You should get 8. So write divided by 4 = 8 (This is your third ‘chunk’.) Since 4 X 8 is exactly 32, there won’t be a remainder. (So there won’t be any more chunks.) - 40 / 4 = 10 32 Last step... - 32 / 4 = 8 0 (Click mouse to continue.)
7
25 - 100 / 4 = 25 172 #4 72 10 - 40 / 4 = 10 32 8 - 32 / 4 = 8 0 Down the side you should have a 25, 10 and 8. Add them together and you get your answer! The answer is 43! 43 So 172 / 4 = 43So 172 / 4 = 43 + Chunk 1 Chunk 2 Chunk 3 (Click mouse to continue.)
