Sky Test Preperation By Dr. Harold Williams of Montgomery College Planetarium Title slide

2 Calvin and Hobbs humor.

3 A. Leo, B. Cancer, C. Gemini, D. Taurus, E. Pisces
If you could see stars during the day, this is what the sky would look like at noon on a given day. This is actually possible during a solar eclipse. The Sun is near the stars of the constellation Gemini. Near which constellation would you expect the Sun to be located at sunset? Actually on July 1991 from Sayulita, Mexico I saw the sun in Gemini near local apparent noon time during a solar eclipse. A. Leo, B. Cancer, C. Gemini, D. Taurus, E. Pisces

4 Some questions to help you think further about the previous question and whether your answer is correct, or whether your answer needs to be changed. How long does it take to go from midday, noon, to sun down approximately? Number of hours? How long does it take the sun to move along the ecliptic from one constellation to the next along the ecliptic? Number of hours, days, months, or years? How long does it take the sun to go once around the ecliptic? Don’t we have a special name for this time period.

6 Where would the Sun appear to set two weeks later?
On about September 22, the beginning of fall, the Sun sets directly to the west as shown on the diagram below. Where would the Sun appear to set two weeks later? A. Farther south, B. In the same place, C. Farther north Is the hemisphere specific? Is it reversed in the southern hemisphere versus the northern hemisphere?

7 Where would the Sun appear to set two weeks later?
On about March 21, the beginning of spring, the Sun sets directly to the west as shown on the diagram below. Where would the Sun appear to set two weeks later? A. Farther south, B. In the same place, C. Farther north Is the hemisphere specific? Is it reversed in the southern hemisphere versus the northern hemisphere?

8 Some questions to help you think further about the two previous question and whether your answer is correct, or whether your answer needs to be changed. On the first day of fall are the days getting longer or shorter? What about the nights? On the first day of spring are the days getting longer or shorter? What about the nights? If the sun is getting lower and the days are getting shorter where is the sun seen. If the sun is getting higher and the days are getting longer where is the sun seen.
