Animal Testing By: Olivia Wahler
2
What is animal testing?
3
Scientists don’t always call it animal testing Sometimes they refer to it in other terms such as: Research experimentation Animal research Vivo testing
4
The Dilemma Should they test on animals for the safety of humans? Does it give accurate results? They don’t know anything about it

Animals tested on Mice Insects (butterflies, fruit flies, worms, etc) Zebra fish Frogs Rabbits Guinea pigs Hamsters Gerbils Cats Dogs Non-human primates Farm animals Etc
13
How much? There are over 3 million animals tested on in the United Kingdom alone each year In the US, about 2,567,713 million animals are tested on each year on average The US is one of the biggest countries to test on animals
14
Society’s View Always on the fence about the issue A person doesn’t always research the subject of animal testing There are groups that care, like PETA
15
Positives and Negatives Save humans from being killed, poisoned, etc Human are the first and major priority Some companies have to test Chimpanzees are the closest animal to having the genes of a human Veterinary Medicines benefit the animals Animals are still suffering Right to be treated as human beings are Can be stuck with viruses forever Not treated gentle Don’t have the same cells and organs Sometimes experiments are useless Cloning

Mars Candy Company According to Peta, Mar’s is “inhumane”: Included a study of angiogenesis and spatial memory by feeding mice catechins and made them exercise on a wheel or water maze Mar’s was also criticized for buying cocoa beans from West Africa where they have child labor
18
Mar’s Candy Company “Mar’s supported a cruel experiment to learn how a chocolate ingredient called PQQ affects metabolism by cramming baby mice into 200-millileter Plexiglas metabolic chambers—around half the size of a 12- ounce soda can—and then submerging the chamber for nearly five hours in a chilled water bath, inducing labored breathing in the distressed mice. Experimenters then shoved tubes down the mice’s throats every day for 10 days to force-feed them the PQQ, after which they were killed and cut up for analysis.”- Mar’s Heartless Animal Experiments

PETA Also known as the “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals” Has been encouraging people to boycott any company not on their list Labels that state “Not Tested on Animal” could be misleading
23
PETA’s Mission Statement People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), with more than 2 million members and supporters, is the largest animal rights organization in the world. PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in laboratories, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of beavers, birds and other "pests," and the abuse of backyard dogs. PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns.
24
The Ethics of it Animal testing is not ethical to some but not always most Some think it’s better to risk the lives of animals than their species Others think it is unethical to reference to the fact that it is killing
25
Christian View In the Bible, Proverbs 12:10 it is quoted. “Whoever is righteous regardeth the life of his beast, but the tender mercies of the wicked is cruel.” Catechism of the Catholic Church Animals have a purpose as do plants Doesn’t give humans the right to disrespect what is in the environment Doesn’t make eating or testing of animals as immoral Does protest cruelty on animals for no reason
26
Christian View Papal Encyclicals Article 2417, “Medical and scientific experimentation on animals is a morally acceptable practice if it remains within reasonable limits and contributes to caring for or saving human lives.” The church is on both sides
27
Christian View Catholic Social Teaching (CST) Shows that there is human dignity for humans only and solidarity The Catholic Church doesn’t see it as a necessary view
