( Jesu, nostra redemptio ) Jesus, our redemption, Our love and our desire, God, creator of all things, Made man at the end of the ages. What clemency moved you To take upon yourself our sins, To accept a cruel death To free us from death? You penetrate into hell enclosed, You deliver the captives; Victor in your noble triumph, You take your place at the right hand of the Father.
4
May your goodness move you to banish our sins by your pardon, and, surpassing all our wishes, to delight us with the beauty of your sight. Be our joy, just as you will be our recompense; may our glory be in you for ever and ever! Amen. Jesus, our love, our desire!
6
Clap your hands, all you peoples! Shout to God will loud songs of joy! For the Lord, the Most High, is terrible, a great King over all the earth. God goes up to shouts of acclaim, Yahweh to a fanfare on the ram’s horn. Let the music sound for our King, let it sound, let the music sound for our God, let it sound.
7
For he is king of the whole world; learn the music, let it sound for God! God reigns over the nations, seated on his holy throne. The leaders of the nations rally to the people of the God of Abraham.
8
Men of Galilee, why do you look with astonishment at the heavens? Just as you have seen Jesus rise up to heaven, so he will return! All people, clap your hands and acclaim God with a joyous voice.
9
Strongly desired by all, The sacred day is dawning, Day when Christ, hope of the world, True God, rises to the highest heavens. As he climbs up above, To return to the throne of his glory, The celestial kingdom rejoices At the return of the Only-Begotten. He is raised above the clouds And has become the hope of believers, For he has reopened paradise Closed by the first man.
13
Jesus did even more for us. When he recedes in heaven, he tells us with an infinite tenderness: « I shall not leave you orphans ».
14
«It is for your own good that I am going,» says Jesus. «because unless I go the Paraclete will not come to you. » This ineffable Conforter is the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of the Father and of the Son, who will come down very soon upon us, and will dwell with us, visible in his works, until Jesus reappears to take away his chosen ones from the world.
15
It is the Holy Spirit who creates faith in the souls, In the same way, it is He who spreads charity into the hearts.
16
His feet will rest on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east.
17
O You who is more glittering than the sun! Send us your Holy Spirit, do not leave us orphans.
18
Like the pillar of fire preceded the Hebrews in their passage towards the Promised Land, Jesus precedes his people to prepare for them a place in heaven. The paschal candle is a figure of the pillar of fire and light, it symbolizes the soul of Jesus reunited to his body in the glory of the Father.
19
May you be blessed, o paschal candle, radiant pillar, you who rejoices us by your joyous and brilliant flame! You speak to us of Jesus!
20
Let us lift up our eyes like the disciples, and let us follow by our desire the One who ascends today and who is going to prepare us a dwelling. Let us lift up our hearts ! Sursum corda ! Let us lift up our eyes like the disciples, and let us follow by our desire the One who ascends today and who is going to prepare us a dwelling. Let us lift up our hearts ! Sursum corda !
