The New Food Pyramid You are more than what you eat.

The New Food Pyramid The United States Department of Agriculture published the traditional food pyramid as a guide to help us make good choices in what we eat and drink.

The Traditional Food Pyramid Generally, the pyramid shape represents the difference in recommended portions of each of the food groups. The largest recommended portions came from food groups on the bottom of the pyramid (grains). This is the base of the pyramid, and foundation of the recommended diet. The traditional pyramid suggests only sparse amounts of foods on the top of the pyramid (fats, oils).

The New Pyramid The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) changed the pyramid in Spring, 2005, because they wanted to do a better job of telling Americans how to be healthy. 8 Children’s Pyramid One of the changes is that the USDA has developed a separate pyramid for children. To explain the many changes, the USDA has developed a website, available at www.mypyramid.gov/kids/index.h tml www.mypyramid.gov/kids/index.h tml This site has many useful tools, including a game that encourages kids to plan their meals and choose a favorite exercise to help stay healthy.

The Pyramid Speaks Some of the other messages the food guide pyramid is designed to send: Some of the other messages the food guide pyramid is designed to send: Eat a variety of foods. A balanced diet is one that includes all the food groups. In other words, have foods from every color, every day.

The Pyramid Speaks Eat less of some foods, and more of others. Eat less of some foods, and more of others. You can see that the bands for meat and protein (purple) and oils (yellow) are skinnier than the others. That's because you need less of those kinds of foods than you do of fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy foods.

The Pyramid Speaks Eat less of some foods, and more of others. Eat less of some foods, and more of others. You also can see the bands start out wider and get thinner as they approach the top. That's designed to show you that not all foods are created equal, even within a healthy food group like fruit.

The Pyramid Speaks Make it personal: Make it personal: Through the USDA's www.mypyramid.gov website, people can get personalized recommendations about the mix of foods they need to eat and how much they should be eating. There is a kids' version of the website available too.

Family Tips 1 Make half your grains whole. Choose whole-grain foods, such as whole-wheat bread, oatmeal, brown rice, and low fat popcorn, more often. 2 Vary your veggies. Go dark green and orange with your vegetables—eat spinach, broccoli, carrots, and sweet potatoes. 3 Focus on fruits. Eat them at meals, and at snack time, too. Choose fresh, frozen, canned, or dried, and go easy on the fruit juice. 7 Don’t sugarcoat it. Choose foods and beverages that do not have sugar and caloric sweeteners as one of the first ingredients. Added sugars contribute calories with few, if any, nutrients. http://teamnutrition.usda.gov/resources/mpk_tips.pdf

Family tips 4 Get your calcium-rich foods. To build strong bones serve low fat and fat-free milk and other milk products several times a day. 5 Go lean with protein. Eat lean or low fat meat, chicken, turkey, and fish. Also, change your tune with more dry beans and peas. Add chick peas, nuts, or seeds to a salad; pinto beans to a burrito; or kidney beans to soup. http://teamnutrition.usda.gov/resources/mpk_tips.pdf

Family Tips 6 Change your oil. We all need oil. Get yours from fish, nuts, and liquid oils such as corn, soybean, canola, and olive oil. 7 Don’t sugarcoat it. Choose foods and beverages that do not have sugar and caloric sweeteners as one of the first ingredients. Added sugars contribute calories with few, if any, nutrients. http://teamnutrition.usda.gov/resources/mpk_tips.pdf
